Vivo shipped 24.8 million phones in the first quarter of 2020: new research
The IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker for 1Q2020 shows that Vivo made it into the top 5 smartphone OEMs in those 3 months. It shipped 24.8 million units in that time, thus growing by 7% year-on-year in this market.
Vivo asserts that this success was due to its continued expansion in several markets, Russia and India included. In terms of the latter, the OEM was found to be the #2 OEM in this country (as it was in a previous report from a different group). The company claims that its 63.3% YoY growth in the same was due to recent releases such as those from its Y series, as well as the S1 Pro.
In addition, Vivo set up a "Smart Retail" system, by which Indian customers could contact retailers via channels such as SMS and social media, thus making purchases and customer support easier despite the nationwide lockdown imposed to combat the spread of Covid-19. This tactic may have kept it bouyant in this market even though it, along with other manufacturers such as Samsung, had been obliged to shut down production in the country at the height of the lockdown.
Similarly, this BBK Electronics subsidiary recorded its strongest performance in Indonesia to date, possibly thanks to analogous strategies. It set up a Home Delivery Service in this market, so that customers could order new devices from this OEM and receive them in a sanitary, safe and timely manner in line with the Covid-19-mandated restrictions in this country.
