Transparent gaming handheld plays Game Boy cartridges, launches $50 cheaper
The ModRetro Chromatic gaming handheld already launched in 2024, and now the manufacturer is releasing a new version of the device. There are two main changes. First, the casing is now made of transparent plastic, available in green, red, purple or black. This provides a view of the motherboard and the three AA batteries required for gaming.
And second, ModRetro has managed to reduce the price by $50 – surprising amid the DRAM crisis. The hardware remains unchanged. The ModRetro Chromatic is not a retro handheld with an ARM chip and software emulation, but rather an FPGA-based handheld designed to play genuine Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges as faithfully as possible. In addition to the processor, the display was also developed specifically for the handheld and is intended to match the Nintendo Game Boy Color in terms of size, resolution and color reproduction.
While the resolution of 160 x 144 pixels has been retained from the original, the device uses a more modern IPS panel with an integrated backlight, allowing for comfortable gaming even at night. Gorilla Glass protects the screen from scratches. The ModRetro Chromatic is even compatible with a Game Boy Link cable for multiplayer games. In addition to a built-in speaker, a 3.5 mm AUX port is also available. As small, modern extras, the handheld offers an optional rechargeable battery and a USB-C port for charging and video output.
Pricing and availability
The ModRetro Chromatic in the four new transparent colors is now available in the manufacturer's online store . The retro handheld costs $149.99 bundled with a Tetris game cartridge, plus shipping, making it $50 cheaper than the older, non-transparent version.
