Toshiba updates Tecra A50-C series with Skylake options
The Tecra A50-C series launched late last December with Broadwell and is now finally available with ULV Skylake CPUs.

Toshiba announced two more Tecra A50-C SKUs today with Intel's 6th generation Core i5-6200U Skylake processor and the associated HD 520 integrated graphics. The A50-C-1GO and A50-C-1H2 are now available in parts of Europe for 1450 Euros and 1300 Euros, respectively. The first Tecra A50-C configurations launched last December with Broadwell options only.

The Tecra series is designed for business use and includes features such as a spill-resistant keyboard, docking port, and Toshiba's "Reliability Guarantee" where users can receive full refunds on their purchases should the product be damaged beyond repair within the first year.

Additionally, the Toshiba notebooks have passed strict HALT standards (Highly Accelerated Lift Test) that simulate three years of hardware stress. Both of the new Tecra A50-C SKUs feature anti-glare 15.6-inch screens in either native 768p or 1080p resolution depending on the configuration. Storage space is also different between the SKUs with the less expensive A50-C-1H2 using a standard 500 GB HDD and the costlier A50-C-1GO using a 256 GB SSD.

Both notebooks should last for up to 8 hours each according to the manufacturer and ship with Windows 7 Pro pre-installed. A a Windows 10 Pro DVD is also provided for easier upgrading.

In our review of the Broadwell Tecra A50-C, we criticized the below average 768p panel and weak outer lid. We recommend opting for the 1080p option or at least a display calibration to improve the poor colors and grayscale out-of-the-box.

After graduating with a B.S. in environmental hydrodynamics from the University of California, I studied reactor physics to become licensed by the U.S. NRC to operate nuclear reactors. There's a striking level of appreciation you gain for everyday consumer electronics after working with modern nuclear reactivity systems astonishingly powered by computers from the 80s.
