With its latest Tecra introduction, Toshiba set out to make its business line of laptops thinner, lighter, and longer-lasting—without sacrificing durability. With its updated design, strong performance, and long battery life, this 15.6-inch notebook makes for a good office mate. Just take a close look at the display and keyboard before buying.

Despite our quibbles with the set up time, pre-installed software and the poor screen, the Tecra R850 is a great business notebook. It has a top-notch hardware design that looks good, feels good to use and, perhaps most importantly, feels strongly built. Its battery life is also very good for a 15.6in notebook.

Communicative. In its press release about the Tecra R850-11P, Toshiba paints its latest creation for the business sector as a paragon of mobility and high-performance. The Japanese manufacturer is setting the bar pretty high for itself; we put the notebook to the test in our review.

A ton of screen real estate on a very luggable, oversized frame—it's the epitome of the Toshiba Tecra R850-S8450. It isn't the sturdiest, fastest, or the most feature packed business laptop, but it delivers competently in every single one of these areas. The HP EliteBook 8560p is the better desktop replacement, but you'll have to deal with an extra pound of weight.

Before I start talking about the very compelling price of Toshiba's Tecra R850, I want to tip my hat to Toshiba for the design of the notebook itself. While the screen may be abysmal and the keyboard leaves at least a little something to be desired, the rest of it is incredibly thoughtful and smart. When my best friend called saying her boss needed a 15.6" notebook for work, but one that was still portable, the R850 was the first one I thought of.

If you are looking for a 15.6” notebook that’s very responsive for most tasks and good at gaming, the Toshiba Tecra R850-S8540 stands out with its fast CPU and strong GPU performance. As more and more notebooks come out with Intel’s Sandy Bridge architecture, the competition will get more exciting, but the Core i7-2620M processor will be future proof for a few years. The notebook looks professional and sleek with a bright screen and it’s reasonably slim and light. Toshiba should take a page out of Lenovo’s playbook when it comes to keyboard design, but other than that, the Tecra R850 is a very nice system that starts at $879.

Like the smaller Tecra R840, the 15-inch Toshiba Tecra R850 is a stylish business notebook. It has a slim, yet sturdy, chassis and offers strong performance and very good endurance. However, the speakers don't impress, and $1,349 is a little on the high side. Those looking for a business laptop that they can easily take to meetings and that can last most of the workday on a charge will really like the Tecra R850.

Toshiba's Tecra R850-10R is arguably just a bit too big for someone who needs to take their laptop with them everywhere, but it’s well-suited as a desktop replacement that can still be mobile. Build quality isn't as robust as some others in this category, though its performance is good, providing you don't need to use graphics-intensive applications.

Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
