Toshiba Satellite Radius P55W-B5224

The Toshiba Satellite Radius P55W is a 15-inch convertible with enough power to handle most work-related tasks. There are five modes to choose from: traditional laptop, tabletop, tablet, presentation and audience.

It's equipped with a 15.6” screen that supports 10-point multi touch. The FHD 1080p display uses IPS technology. Watching videos on this device will be a joy with the nice viewing angles and color reproduction of the IPS technology together with the high-resolution.

The P55W is powered by a i7-4510U 2.0GHz processor with Intel HD 4400 Graphics accompanied by 8 GB of RAM. The specs are more than enough to run most productivity and work software while being able to play your FHD movies and play some newer games at medium settings. The downside is the 1 TB hard drive which only runs at 5400 rpm. An SSD would have increased performance greatly, but would have also increased the price.

Toshiba claims that the battery can last up to 8 hours of mixed use, which judging from the processor seems to be a pretty fair claim. The convertible weighs about 5 pounds (2.27 kg), which makes it a pretty heavy tablet but it gets the job done.

The Toshiba Satellite Radius P55W-B5224 tries very hard to avoid compromise. It’s simultaneously a 2-in-1 and an extremely powerful PC that offers the best processor performance we’ve seen from a dual-core notebook this year. The system also has a good selection of USB ports, a large keyboard, and excellent speakers as well.

Overall, the Toshiba Satellite Radius is a good take on the flip-and-fold design pioneered by Lenovo. In addition to its multimode versatility, the laptop sports a gorgeous aluminum exterior, a vivid 1080p screen, rich audio, long battery life, and surprisingly powerful internal components for the price. There are some caveats, however.

With its slim design and excellent performance, the Toshiba Satellite Radius P55W-B5224 is one of the best convertible-hybrid systems we've reviewed. Admittedly, the 15-inch size is too big for most people to use as an on-the-go tablet, but for a 15-inch laptop that also offers touch and tablet functionality, it's hard to beat. With superior performance and longer battery life, the Toshiba Satellite Radius P55W-B5224 is easy to recommend, making it our Editors' Choice for midrange convertible-hybrid laptops.

Toshiba has a winner on its hands with the Satellite Radius P55W. This attractive multimedia notebook gives solid performance and can go from work to play and back again with the flip of a hinge. You probably won't use this system in tablet mode often, but it's nice to know you can kick back with a touch-screen game or watch a flick without the keyboard getting in the way.

Toshiba’s new Satellite Radius “2-in-1″ convertible laptop may not revolutionize the category, but if you’re looking for a large-screen laptop that can convert to a full slate, you could do worse than the Radius P55W-B5224, provided you don’t need bleeding-edge performance.

70% Toshiba Satellite Radius review: A big laptop with a really big, limber display
Source: PC World English Archive.org version
When all is said and done, the Toshiba Satellite Radius is a decent laptop-tablet hybrid, hold the tablet. It has a relatively fast processor, delivers good battery life, and boasts a few premium design touches. It’s not quite as well-executed as the smaller Yoga 2 Pro, and its display isn’t nearly as good, but it costs much less than Lenovo’s offering.

While the Toshiba Satellite Radius P50W is relatively slim and light for a 15-inch laptop, its size is still a bit a detriment to its convertible nature. If you can get past that though, the system offers a stylish design with good battery life and plenty of USB 3.0 ports for adding peripherals. It even features the latest 802.11ac for fast wireless networking.

Thanks to the combination of a great price and stacked hardware, the Radius 15 is one of the few successful UHD laptops. It joins a small pantheon of 4K laptops, with the Asus ZenBook Pro UX501 being its closest exemplar. In some ways, the Radius 15 is a better overall system with a more vibrant screen, a sharper design that's also thinner and smaller to boot.

Starting at £599 for the Full HD version (pricing for the 4K version is yet to be revealed, but expect it to be quite a chunk more), the Toshiba Satellite Radius 15 is shaping up to be a solid offering and one that ticks a number of boxes if you seek an attractive, well-built and highly configurable notebook that happens to be flexible too.

At a very reasonable £599, the Toshiba Satellite Radius 15 is a laptop to keep your eye on, particularly if you're after a large-screened computer. However, it faces fierce competition from the Asus Zenbook UX305, which costs £50 more. Build quality and battery life aren’t superb, but the hinge and touchscreen are excellent features.

Finally, new P-Series laptops are arriving in the form of the P50-C or touch-enabled P50t-C. Both are 15.6in and are 15% thinner than the outgoing model. The P50t-C will come with a 3,840x2,160 touch display with an IGZO display. The screen will also come pre-calibrated with ChromaTune for greater accuracy. Graphics performance will also be the best in the Satellite range, with a choice of a Nvidia GeForce GTX950M for dedicated graphics.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

70%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
