After announcing the revival of the Dynabook family in April, Toshiba is now ready to unveil its first set of laptops bound for the United States. These three models will be the mid-range 13.3-inch Portege X30, mid-range 14-inch Tecra X40, and less expensive 13.3-inch Portege A30.
The two premium X models are notable for their Wi-Fi 6 options, magnesium alloy chassis, and Windows 10 Modern Standby features that allow OS updates to run in the background even when the PC is in Sleep mode. Internally, Toshiba is claiming a new "S-Type" fan design for a 10 percent increase in airflow without necessarily increasing rotation speeds or fan noise. Whiskey Lake-U CPUs will come standard across all SKUs.
The cheaper Portege A30 will be thicker, heavier, made of plastic, and with less RAM than the Portege X30 and Tecra X40. It's also worth noting that both the Portege X30 and Tecra X40 have been available outside of the United States for over a year and so their chassis designs are not entirely new.
We will update this page once prices and availability are known. In the meantime, the concise comparison table below shows the major internal differences we can expect between these three models.

Toshiba
IRVINE, Calif. – July 9, 2019 – Dynabook Americas, Inc. (formerly Toshiba America Client Solutions, Inc.),
today announced its first Dynabook-branded solutions with three laptops and a USB-C Dock. The three
laptops include the Portégé A30, Portégé® X30 and Tecra® X40. Today also represents the 30 th
Anniversary of the first Dynabook-branded laptop in Japan.
“We have evolved and these four products are the perfect example of the direction the organization plans
to the take as Dynabook,” said Phillip Osako, vice president, marketing and engineering, Dynabook
Americas, Inc. “Our new X Series and newly redesigned Portégé A30 push the mobile computing envelope
as powerful, full-performance solutions with thinner and lighter form factors. While the USB-C Dock
demonstrates our understanding of the modern mobile professional’s connectivity and expansion needs.”
The new 13.3-inch Portégé X30 and new 14-inch Tecra X40 are part of the Dynabook premium laptop
collection and include a variety of upgrades. First and foremost, these new laptops feature the latest 8 th
Generation Intel® Core™ VPro™ processors (codenamed Whiskey Lake), which improves connectivity
speeds and extends battery life. With a 13.3-inch display, the ultraportable Portégé X30 measures 15.9
mm thin and weighs just 2.3 pounds, making it our lightest X Series laptop to date. Offering the perfect
balance of portability and increased screen real estate, the Tecra X40 features an easily portable form
factor that is just 16.9 mm thin and 2.7 pounds.
The Portégé X30 and Tecra X40 laptops are available with Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6™, the new Wi-Fi standard
based on 802.11ax. This enhancement enables next-generation Wi-Fi connectivity, provides higher
capacity, coverage, and improves performance even in congested environments with many connected
devices such as conference halls and other public venues.
Both X Series laptops feature Windows 10 Modern Standby which delivers instant on/off capabilities. This
feature allows optimized software and applications on the Portégé X30 and Tecra X40 to stay up-to-date
by maintaining a low-power connection to an available network (Wi-Fi, mobile broadband/cellular or
wired Ethernet) in order to run background processes while the laptop is in sleep mode. The ability to
remain always on and connected to the Internet, ensures a user’s email, notifications and calendar are
current. Not only does this feature boost system wake and resume times, it also makes the laptop more
energy efficient.
To support the new performance features of the X Series laptops, Dynabook re-engineered the fan
technology for improved airflow and cooling by increasing the volume of air by 10%, while also lowering
rotation speeds. Called an S-Type fan, this cooling design improvement delivers a quieter running system,
especially when running processor-intensive tasks.
Both laptops incorporate Dynabook’s elegant and durable Onyx Blue ToughBody™ magnesium alloy
chassis designed to pass Military Durability Testing (MIL-STD-810G) standards. Meaning, these laptops
can easily handle the rigors of professional mobility. Dynabook also backed both X Series laptops with the
company’s standard international three-year warranty.
Dynabook Portégé A30
Ideal for small and medium businesses, Dynabook completely redesigned the 13.3-inch Portégé A30 to
make it our thinnest and lightest A Series laptop to date. These design enhancements resulted in the
Portégé A30 measuring 11 percent thinner (19.9 mm) and nearly a half pound lighter at 2.65 pounds while
still being a full-featured performance laptop. Featuring a newly designed Polycarbonate Acrylonitrile
Butadiene Styrene (ABS) chassis, the Portégé A30 was designed to pass the Military Durability Testing
(MIL-STD-810G) standard, further demonstrating the company’s commitment to durability.
Equipped with 8 th Generation Intel® Quad Core processors and Windows 10 Pro, the Portégé A30 was
designed to offer seamless integration into any corporate infrastructure. Dynabook fortified the A Series
laptop with security elements including the company’s proprietary BIOS, TPM 2.0 and optional smart card
reader. Two new biometrics features available on the Portégé A30 are an integrated IR camera for face
authentication and a Synaptics’ SecurePad™ with integrated fingerprint reader. To expand the overall
functionality of the laptop in terms of data, display and power, Dynabook added a USB-C port to the
laptop, which pairs perfectly with the new Dynabook USB-C Dock.
Dynabook USB-C Dock
The Dynabook USB-C Dock is the newest addition to the company’s expansive portfolio of industry-
leading docking solutions and features a streamlined design. The dock supports 10 ports and an SD Card
Slot to expand overall productivity and connectivity to make it the ideal complement for any laptop HD
monitors or one 4K UHD monitor. The front of the dock has the following ports: an SD Card Slot, USB-C
(Power & Data), two USB 3.1 and a Headphone/Mic. The back of the dock offers the following ports: two
USB 3.1, HDMI, VGA, Display Port 1.4 and RJ45. For convenience, one of the USB 3.1 ports on the front of
the dock delivers power to charge phones, tablets and other peripherals. When coupled with a compatible
Tecra or Portégé laptop a user can use the power button on the dock to turn on the laptop. The USB-C
Dock will sell for $199.99 (MSRP).
These Dynabook-branded products will be available at us.dynabook.com and from the company’s
network of resellers. Dynabook plans to include the Portégé® X30, Tecra® X40 and Portégé A30 as part
of the organization’s Build-to-Order (BTO) program giving users the ability to customize the following
options including memory, storage, display and security capabilities. All Dynabook laptops are designed,
engineered and rigorously tested in dedicated Dynabook facilities to deliver greater peace of mind and
proven reliability. These new solutions featuring the Dynabook brand will ship next month.
