In KAKU: Ancient Seal, players take on the role of young Kaku, who sets out with his flying pig companion Piggy to restore balance to the world. Along the way, they engage in action-packed battles, explore mysterious temples and solve a variety of environmental puzzles. The action RPG is currently 60% off on Steam until November 9, bringing the price down to $9.99 from $24.99. According to SteamDB, the previous maximum discount was 55%, meaning the game has never been this cheap before.

The combat system offers fairly familiar action RPG mechanics. Players take on enemies using fast melee combos, evasive maneuvers and powerful special attacks. Those looking to customize their fighting style can experiment with different skill trees, equipment and runestones. Outside combat, exploration takes center stage. The game world spans four large regions, ranging from snowy mountains and swamps to deserts and volcanic landscapes.

In its review, Softpedia particularly praised the varied game world, versatile combat system and successful blend of action and exploration. The difficulty also seems to strike a good balance. However, the reviewers were less impressed by the predictable story and combat encounters, which can become somewhat repetitive over time despite the wide range of abilities. According to the publication, some gameplay mechanics also feel unnecessarily complicated, while the puzzles offer little in the way of fresh ideas. Nevertheless, the game earned a solid 8 out of 10.

On Metacritic, KAKU: Ancient Seal holds a Metascore of 74. Its user score of 5.1 is considerably lower, although it's based on just 19 ratings and therefore isn't particularly representative. The picture is more positive on Steam, where 78% of more than 1,100 user reviews are positive.

KAKU: Ancient Seal doesn't reinvent the wheel, but its colorful and varied game world should appeal particularly to players who enjoy exploration. Anyone who likes uncovering hidden secrets and occasionally taking on powerful enemies could find plenty to enjoy here. The action RPG is rated Steam Deck Playable.
