Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold3 is one of the most eagerly awaited smartphones this year. It is the third-generation of Samsung’s cutting-edge foldable OLED display technology, but it will also be the first from the company to support S-Pen input. Given how fragile the first-generation Fold display was, the Z Fold3 looks like it will mark a dramatic step up in durability for foldable display technology.
The Galaxy Z Fold3 also has some big shoes to fill this year as well. Samsung advised several months ago that it would not be launching a new Galaxy Note model in a similar launch window as its next-generation foldables due to the global chip shortage. Instead, Samsung is counting on its Galaxy Note power user base to jump on board the Galaxy Z Fold3 instead. If the forced experiment proves to be a success, it could spell the end of the Galaxy Note series, particularly as Samsung has now also added S-Pen support to the Galaxy S series.
One lingering question, however, has been how Samsung plans to integrate the S-Pen into the Galaxy Z Fold3 experience. Now a fresh leak courtesy of 91mobiles reveals that Samsung has created a special case with a slot for the Z Fold3 S-Pen, much like it did for the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Overall, it seems like a reasonable solution, although it is clearly not as seamless as the in-body integration of the S-Pen in the Galaxy Note line. Like the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the S-Pen and case accessory remains optional, so you can continue using the Fold without the slightly added bulk if you choose.
