In December, we reported that there would be "no Android 10 or Widevine DRM fix for the Redmi Note 8 Pro" in 2019. That statement proved the case, as the device still awaits both. However, at least one may not be that far off.
According to a post on Mi.com, Xiaomi has been informing some owners that a fix for Widevine DRM L1 will be included in the next OTA. Apparently, this will land in mid-March. This would mean that most variants would have gone over two months between updates, which may come as a surprise to some Redmi Note 8 Pro owners.
Moreover, it is unclear what branch of MIUI to which this Widevine DRM OTA will apply. The China branch, for instance, is the only to have received Android 10. Meanwhile, the European, Global and Indian branches are all on different versions of MIUI 11. While some people have suggested that Xiaomi could tie the Widevine DRM fix in with an upgrade to Android 10, there is no evidence to suggest that this will be the case. On the contrary, the Redmi Note 8 has just received another global build based on Android 9.0 Pie, so Android 10 may well arrive on the Redmi Note 8 Pro after a Widevine DRM fix does.
