US Tesla buyers’ wait for a much sought-after feature is coming to an end. The EV maker is finally making Matrix Headlights available on its home turf.
Matrix Headlights, also known as adaptive headlights or pixel lighting, has a practical application during nighttime or low-light driving. It reduces the headlight by using external cameras to determine which pixels to dim to avoid blinding other drivers on the road. The effect is increased visibility for oncoming cars while ensuring the Tesla driver retains maximum visibility by keeping the necessary parts of the road illuminated.
Responding to a post on X, Lars Moravy, Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, said the new Tesla Model Y will get the Matrix Headlights first through a software update. Other models like the Model 3, Model X, and Model Y will follow suit, provided they have the appropriate hardware.
The feature is already available on Tesla cars in Europe, where the company has named it Adaptive Lighting. However, Tesla was forced to wait for regulatory approval before releasing it in the US.
