While Tesla's chief competitor BYD has already released the world's fastest production car, Tesla is still biding its time with the successor to its first ever vehicle model, the Roadster.
According to Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla's chief of design, a concept of the "flying" supercar will be demoed in the next two months, just as promised.
The Tesla Roadster 2 release date, however, is seemingly pegged for 2027, as Franz inferred that Tesla will "move quicker" from the showcase of the concept to a "sellable product" in under two years.
Unfortunately, this also means that the Tesla Roadster 2 is still in its concept form, while its production is, as Tesla puts it in a new job ad, "still in its early development stages." In the job description, however, Tesla hints that the "cutting-edge" Roadster 2 will have a brand new high-voltage battery and powertrain architecture, hinting at a significant performance boost compared to anything it currently offers, including the Model S Plaid.
The engineer that Tesla will hire will be taking "large scale manufacturing systems for new battery products and architectures from the early concept development stage through equipment launch, optimization and handover to local operations teams."
The Tesla Roadster 2 is supposed to sport some rather insane specs that are supposed to accelerate it from 0-60 mph in under a second. Or, as Elon Musk puts it, the Roadster 2 will be able to "fly." Many analysts, as well as the CEO of Rimac, don't expect that to happen without some sort of downforce delivered by the type of powerful skirt fans that Tesla patented not long ago. The concept is similar to that of the McMurtry Spéirling electric hypercar that can do 0-60 mph in 1.55 seconds.
Besides the insane sub-second acceleration specs, Tesla hinted that the Roadster 2 will boast technology borrowed from SpaceX. Now, whether this means the alloys that the Starship is built of, or the "wings" and fans downforce system, remains to be heard when Tesla demonstrates the Roadster 2 this current holiday quarter.
