A Tesla Model S with a heavily modified interior, that is to say, interior stripped bare, has achieved a blisteringly fast 8.56-second quarter mile run. To put that into perspective, the Pininfarina Battista, a hypercar costing a cool $2.2 million, edges forth by a mere whisper at just 8.55 seconds.
The video, posted by the owner of the Model S as well as the 'Tesla Plaid Racing' YouTube channel Miguel Roy, portrays the Model S completing the quarter-mile in 8.563 seconds with a top speed recorded at 162 MPH. These utterly astonishing numbers far exceed what can typically be expected from a ~$80,000 sedan.
Tesla asserts a 9.5-second quarter-mile time for the Model S Plaid, so Roy's run manages to slice almost a second off that. While ICE cars can be tuned to squeeze out more performance (think superchargers, intricate fuel injection systems, etc), it is not exactly clear how Roy managed to improve his car's performance. Well, apart from the obvious weight reduction courtesy of the car's interior being stripped to the bone.
