In Gunfire Reborn, players choose from a roster of anthropomorphic heroes – like a cat ninja or a bird mage – and battle through procedurally generated levels filled with enemies, bosses and hidden rooms. Each run offers new scrolls, weapons and upgrades, allowing for custom builds and fresh strategies. The game is played from a first-person perspective, featuring tight shooting mechanics and cel-shaded visuals that create a smooth, vibrant experience.
Gunfire Reborn blends fast-paced shooter action with classic roguelite mechanics. Each death ends a run, but players can spend earned soul points to unlock new heroes and permanent upgrades, keeping the experience fresh and rewarding. For those who prefer not to go it alone, the game also supports co-op for up to four players – also on the Steam Deck (available on Amazon for about $440), where it’s rated “Verified” and runs smoothly.
In Maniac’s German review, Gunfire Reborn stood out for its accessible first-person gameplay, broad range of build options and rewarding progression system. The co-op mode also earned praise – not just for enabling team tactics, but for encouraging players to create synergistic builds. However, the review pointed out some drawbacks in single-player mode: the difficulty appears clearly tuned for group play, which can leave solo players at a disadvantage.
Despite some balancing issues, Gunfire Reborn received solid to high scores across all platforms. Maniac awarded it a strong 88 out of 100 in their review. On Metacritic, the game holds a more moderate Metascore of 75 and a User Score of 7.0. The most impressive feedback, however, comes from the Steam community: 93% of more than 100,000 user reviews are positive – a level of acclaim that few indie titles ever achieve.
