Saving the world as a noble hero may sound appealing, but it’s hardly a fresh idea in gaming. Iratus: Lord of the Dead turns the tables by putting players in the role of the villain – unleashing chaos instead of preventing it. Right now, it’s back at its lowest price, with a steep 90% discount.

Iratus: Lord of the Dead was developed by Unfrozen and released in 2020 by German publisher Daedalic Entertainment. At its core, it’s a classic roguelite RPG – but with a dark twist. Instead of playing the hero, players take on the role of Iratus, a necromancer who has finally broken free after centuries of imprisonment. His mission is simple: to unleash death and destruction upon humanity. But Iratus doesn’t fight alone – he raises armies of the undead from the corpses of his enemies, summoning skeletons, vampires and banshees to do his bidding in battle.

German gaming magazine GameStar reviewed Iratus and noted strong similarities between its combat system and that of genre classic Darkest Dungeon. Battles are turn-based, with four player-controlled units facing off against four enemies. Success depends on smart positioning, effective skill combinations and the use of status effects. True to its roguelite roots, a single defeat means starting from scratch.

Beyond its tactical depth, GameStar especially praised Iratus’ variety of units. With more than 20 different undead minions to choose from, players have plenty of flexibility when building their teams. The extensive customization options – for both the necromancer and his minions – also earned positive feedback. However, the review pointed out a few drawbacks: the story and overall presentation fall short, and unit balancing could use some refinement.

Overall, GameStar gave Iratus a solid score of 75 out of 100. Metacritic reflects a similar sentiment, with a Metascore of 78 and a User Score of 7.5. Steam users have been slightly more generous, with around 8,000 reviews averaging 85% positive. And for those who enjoy gaming on the go: Iratus is marked as “Playable” on the Steam Deck (currently available for about $440 on Amazon).

90% discount on Steam

Iratus: Lord of the Dead usually sells for around $30 on Steam, but it’s currently available for just $3 thanks to a 90% discount. According to SteamDB, this matches the lowest price the game has ever seen. The offer runs until November 3.
