As if to soothe the anxiety of early Roadster 2 adopters who have been sitting on their deposits for years now, Elon Musk teased that Tesla will be releasing its next-gen supercar in 2025.
When BYD announced its first electric hypercar about a year ago, Elon Musk immediately jumped to explain that the Tesla Roadster 2 will be a radical redesign done with collaboration with SpaceX. It will, in fact, have a sub-second acceleration as it becomes an "exciting flying machine with the SpaceX package," tipped Musk.
Said package could be little else but cold air thrusters as per the CEO of another electric hypercar company, Rimac, and Elon Musk confirmed so way back in 2019. "Will use SpaceX cold gas thruster system with ultra-high pressure air in a composite over-wrapped pressure vessel in place of the 2 rear seats," he advised at the time, and that's about the only way the Roadster 2 can achieve a sub-second acceleration indeed.
Then came the Cybertruck production delay, and the pressure to release cheaper cars like the Model 2 and the Cybercab, and the Roadster 2 project went on the back burner. Elon even promised a "mind-blowing demo" for last year that didn't materialize, so hopefully the "flying" Roadster will be making a cameo in 2025.
BYD, however, is already selling a 1300 HP hypercar that can demonstrably fly, at least for brief periods of time. What's more, the world's largest EV maker just demonstrated what the Yangwang U9's active suspension system can do if the need arises by filming it glide over a pothole in a 20-feet jump.
BYD's active suspension system has three distinct subsections - DiSus-C, DiSus-A, and DiSus-P - that control the variable damping, air suspension, and the hydraulics, respectively.
Working in tandem, these systems can individually adjust each wheel's ground clearance, and even make the whole car perform vertical jumps when needed, just don't tell the police that it can go over road spike strips in a chase.
One such pothole avoiding jump can be seen in the video below, and it would be interesting to see if there is any reaction by Elon Musk over the flying hypercar demo.
