Tesla slashes Cybertruck workforce to bolster its best-selling EV instead
It's been known for a while now that Tesla Cybertruck demand is falling, with images of lots full of Cybertrucks and reports of hastening delivery timelines flooding the internet. Now, there is more concrete evidence that the Tesla Cybertruck isn't selling nearly as well as Tesla had anticipated.
According to inside sources who spoke to Business Insider, a survey was conducted in December asking Cybertruck production line staff about their preferences while informing them that some of the Cybertruck team would be transitioned to the Model Y assembly line. Additionally, two separate sources told Business Insider that Tesla would be scaling back Cybertruck production altogether.
This survey reportedly came shortly after Tesla told some Cybertruck assembly line workers that they would not need to come to work in December 2024, effectively putting the workers on furlough while the Cybertruck production was paused. Fortunately for the workers, this pause only lasted three days, but the changes to the production schedule were announced shortly afterwards.
According to the insiders, not enough Cybertruck workers opted to move to the Model Y production line, so some were forced to make the shift when the new schedule came into effect in January of this year. Since the start of Cybertruck production in November 2023, there have been sporadic reports of inconsistent production, with battery supply chains being one of the biggest issues faced by the electric pickup truck.
Tesla may also be prioritising the production ramp of the Model Y Juniper refresh, which is expected to be a popular model when it launches later this year, given the Model Y's hyper successful track record.
