Survey: 95 percent of developer studios are planning live service games

Live service games, also known as Games as a Service, are designed to have a long lifespan of several years. To keep players happy, they are constantly provided with fresh content - new game mechanics, story content or even crossover events with other brands. Subscription-based games such as World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XIV are the exception here. Most live service games only need to be purchased once and are financed in the long term via in-game transactions.

Titles such as Fortnite, Diablo 4, Destiny 2 or Rainbow Six Siege are leading the way and show how successful the concept of Games as a Service can be. According to a survey conducted as part of the Game Development Report 2023 by Griffin Gaming Partners in collaboration with Rendered VC almost all developers now seem to want to jump on this bandwagon.

In this survey, 537 developer studios worldwide were asked whether they have games with live service in the pipeline. 65 percent of developers stated that they were already working on such a game. 30 percent of the survey participants confirmed that they were planning a live service game. Only 5 percent of respondents stated that they had no such plans.
