It seems HMD has an internal Android Pie beta for the Nokia 8, presumably in the process of working on a stable version for the 2017 flagship. However, this build is now out there for the public to download, thanks to an XDA leaker. It can be tested via this website's forum for the phone.

HMD has built up a good reputation for providing its Nokia smartphones with timely updates to their Android operating systems. It has committed to an upgrade to Pie (Android 9.0) for its 2018 models, the 6.1 to 7.1 lines, and has already delivered on this in some cases. Furthermore, it seems that it is also bringing Pie to at least some of its 2017 phones. This impression is substantiated by the discovery of a closed, internal beta of Pie for the Nokia 8.

The existence of this build was announced by the XDA contributor Hikari Calyx via Twitter. The beta was also posted to the site's Nokia 8 development forum. Users with this phone and who wish to try out the Pie beta can download it from that page and install it while following the instructions carefully. The phones in question will need to be unrooted, running stock Nokia formware and clean of modifications such as xposed.

This ROM also includes a December security patch update (albeit for Oreo). The developer who opened this page also advises potential users to unlock the bootloader of their Nokia 8s in case of mishaps. In addition, and as with all betas, there may be severe bugs to contend with while running this new OS for the Nokia 8.
