Starlink installers and resellers in remote or rural regions could be delighted to learn that SpaceX has changed its incentive payout scheme. Previously, SpaceX was only giving Starlink service credit to its referrers.

Starlink has begun doling out cash to a user's preferred bank account directly, instead of only giving service credit for referrals. For any new subscription with a referral link, the referrer will now get $100 transferred directly into their bank account.

The new Starlink incentive structure could turn third-party Starlink installers or resellers in rural regions into a veritable distribution channel, as they will be encouraged to sign up as many people as they can to get the award from SpaceX, rather than service credits towards their next monthly bill.

How to activate Starlink referral cash payments

To change the referral mode to cash payment from Starlink, users would need to check the Referral Reward Types menu in their account portal to see if the cash option is visible so they can switch from the service credit one.

After designating a bank account, all future payments from Starlink will be directed to it upon switching. The user will receive an email when someone signs up for Starlink satellite Internet service with their referral link, and they can track the cash payouts in the Referrals tab in their account portal.

Needless to say, all of this needs to be done before sending the actual referral link for someone to activate, or the referrer will be stuck with Starlink service credits instead. In Europe, a similar Starlink referral switcheroo changed the incentive from one free month to service credit, but cash referrals are still not available anywhere but the US just yet.

Who can earn from Starlink cash referrals?

When SpaceX rolled out Starlink's first referral scheme in 2022, the reward was modest and geographically limited, meant to raise awareness about a satellite internet service many people still didn't know existed. Starlink then introduced a standing customer referral offer, giving both the referrer and the referee one free month of service, credited about 30 days after the friend activates and keeps their subscription.

At the time, Starlink was explicit that using referrals to make money violates its terms of service and can lead to account suspension, reinforcing that this channel was built for word-of-mouth advertising. So far, the reward has always come as a service credit rather than cash, so the shift toward direct cash payouts deposited straight into a bank account could matter to a reseller or an independent installer whose business is on the rooftop mounting dishes.

For now, the option is still only available if they are actual subscribers on an active Residential or Roam plan, yet converting the incentive to cash from service credits could turn Starlink's existing service network into a genuine sales force, professionalizing referrals for the first time since the program began.
