Tesla adds Starlink to Cybercab first as Model Y may be next

Tesla is kitting its first vehicles with Starlink satellite Internet in the form of a true integration flush with the body and painted in the same color. Elon Musk is adamant that all Tesla and other vehicles will eventually get satellite broadband as the only way to equip them with high-speed Internet on the go.

The first Tesla car to get Starlink integration is the Cybercab and it comes as a Mini kit of the type that can be acquired on Amazon for $249 without a data subscription plan. The automaker's robotaxi account posted images of the first Cybercab built with a Starlink antenna that is factory integrated into the roofline.

It is actually a square cutout with a low profile rather than the dish bolted on earlier prototypes. This reveal follows a July teaser in which Tesla and Starlink described the satellite hardware as "directly integrated" into the Cybercab via a cutaway diagram and confirms that the depicted setup has now reached actual production units.

While the Cybercab doesn't need internet to drive itself and is instead using Tesla's AI4 computer for the task, Tesla is positioning it as a fleet and passenger comfort feature. The dish will support fleet management, navigation, customer service, and passenger entertainment, including 4K video streaming.

Musk is also framing it as a coverage safety net. He cautioned that robotaxis shouldn't get stuck in "Bermuda Triangles" of lacking cellular connectivity as the service expands beyond dense cities. Musk is now saying that all cars will eventually get Starlink, calling it the only way to deliver high bandwidth to billions of vehicles. While Tesla now sells millions of cars a year with LTE modems, a Starlink dish integration fits the pattern of deepening ties between Tesla and SpaceX, which already supplies Grok as Tesla's voice assistant and is buying hundreds of millions of dollars of Tesla hardware.

For now, Starlink-laden Cybercabs remain limited to production at Gigafactory Texas, with a wider robotaxi rollout still pending real-world driving data. Whether satellite internet becomes standard across the Model 3 or Model Y is a much longer bet, but Tesla clearly wants the Cybercab to be the proof of concept, while the Model Y is its only robotaxi at the moment.

Moreover, SpaceX is reportedly working on a dedicated Starlink modem for mobile chips from the likes of Qualcomm, Samsung, or MediaTek, so whole dish installations might be an early and rather crude form of in-vehicle satellite Internet integration.
