Envision TV AR is a new Android and iOS app designed by Sony to help users reluctant to go outdoors shop for a new big-screen device in any case. It uses the augmented-reality (AR) features of a smartphone to virtually place Sony TVs in any given room. Therefore, the user can "measure" various models for optimal fit and placement according to their available space.

In this brave new peri-Covid-19 pandemic world, AR may become more and more prevalent as consumers may look for ways of poking, prodding and measuring new home-tech purchases as normal if precluded from going to stores and doing so in person. Sony's Envision TV app is the latest example of such applications from this OEM.

The company asserts that this app allows a user to superimpose a range of their TVs on a given room, so long as the phone used to do so supports AR, obviously. This may be particularly useful if a series or model in question has various screen sizes.

Therefore, the user can make sure that 85-inch device of their dreams really can fit in the space earmarked for it. Sony claims that its TVs can be visualized in wall- or stand-mounted formats. Envision TV AR is also rated to generate details on other important specs, such as ports, per SKU supported.

However, it is up to the individual user if this experience would really match examining a live demo model in earnest and in-store. Either way, Envision TV AR is now available to download on iOS or Android, for those who would like to find out.
