At $800, Sony's VAIO VPCEJ16FX/B is relatively affordable for a media focused 17-inch laptop that comes with a Blu-ray compatible drive. The problem is that beyond the media features, the laptop is a bit anemic in performance. It uses a slower Core i3 processor compared to many that use Core i5's at this price point.

The Sony VAIO E Series (VPCEJ15FG) is a 17.3in general-purpose notebook with mid-range specifications. Sony's VAIO E Series notebooks are intended for general purpose use, and the VPCEJ15FG fulfils that requirement happily. If you're trying to complete too many tasks at once the E Series does tend to pause for a few seconds, but we only encountered this a few times in our testing.

This is about the only change made the the laptop and that is a real shame. While it is certainly affordable for a Sony laptop with a $800 price tag, there are just too many alternatives at this price point for other 17-inch laptops that just have a better mix of features for a variety of different users.

Sony rarely compromises on build quality or the chic aesthetics of its portfolio, one reason the snappily-named Sony VPC-EJ3D1E lands at 800 euros ($1015), while notebooks featuring similar specs can be had cheaper elsewhere. The Sony Vaio EJ3D slightly trails the pack in performance and display quality and the lack of USB-3 means a few extra seconds shifting files to and from USB sticks, but keyboard and mouse are both excellent and its appearance means the EJ3D will appeal to many.

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

67.33%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
