Reports of a cheaper subwoofer from Sonos have been corroborated by The Verge, confirming that the Sub Mini is approaching launch. Rumors about the gadget began last year after the device appeared in an update to its app.
The recently released Sonos Ray is a more affordable soundbar from the company; the new Sub Mini would be its companion device. You will be able to wirelessly pair the gadget with the Ray, Beam and Arc speakers.
When the current Sonos Sub Gen 3 is linked to one of the company's soundbars, the audio output is adjusted accordingly; the soundbar elevates higher frequencies, and the subwoofer focuses on bass sounds. It is expected that the Sub Mini will work in a similar way.
The product is small and cylindrical, with The Verge producing a 3D render of the gadget. This differs from the square shape of the existing Sonos Sub Gen 3, but both subwoofers feature a cutout in the centre of the device.
Further details about the Sub Mini, such as its size and weight, are unknown. It will likely be smaller than the Sub Gen 3, which measures 15.3 x 15.8 x 6.2-in (38.9 x 40.2 x 15.8 cm) and weighs 36.3 lbs (16 kg). It is also unclear when the gadget will be released and how much it will cost; again, it is expected to cost less than the Sub Gen 3, which is priced at US$749.
