Both the Segway Xyber and Xafari have strong off-road DNA, but the Xyber is a chunky Sur-Ron-style e-bike made for two-up riding and up to 95 miles of range, while the Xafari resembles something between an electric step-through commuter bike and a fat-tyre eMTB.

As battery technology has advanced, more brands have started venturing into the land of the electric bicycle and motorcycle. Just a few short months ago, we saw everyone from the scrappy Super73, to veteran motorcycle makers Royal Enfield and e-bike giant NIU released their takes on the electric motorcycle. Even Segway launched an electric scooter not too long ago. At CES 2024, though, Segway is going in the other direction this year, announcing two capable off-road-ready electric bicycles for 2024.

Starting off with the most visually exciting of the announcements, the Segway Xyber is a bit of a mix between the aggressive motorcycle styling of a Sur-Ron and the more muted, lightweight looks of a Super73, with some Cyberpunk aesthetics thrown in for good measure. Being designed as a sort of do-it-all, off-road-ready machine, the Xyber has 120 mm of suspension travel from some pretty substantial looking front forks and a rear mono-shock.

The wide motorcycle-style tyres should also help the Xyber off-road, and they also make the e-bike look burlier than something like a Sur-Ron. Unlike the Sur-Ron, the Segway Xyber has pedals, despite the motorcycle looks. Visually, the Xyber is quite unique, with a partially exposed frame constructed of round tubes in the top portion of the bike, with square tubing making up the rear swingarm and the bottom half of the frame surrounding the battery.

The only unexposed parts of the frame are in front of the seat, where it is covered by an angular metal or plastic fairing, and the front of the battery compartment, where a bash guard protects the batteries from debris. The Xyber's seat is designed for riding with a passenger, although there are no grab handles, and the seat appears to be too dainty for a trip longer than a few minutes.

Segway has not yet disclosed the exact motor power output, but it claims the Xyber will be capable of 175 Nm, which sounds like something in the neighbourhood of 1,500–2,000 W, and up to 95 miles when equipped with the dual 1,440 Wh batteries.

Segway Xafari: a dual-suspension, all-purpose step-through e-bike

Although the Xyber seems to be the more exciting of Segway's CES 2024 launches, the Xafari might just be the more practical e-bike. The Xafari features an accessible step-through design, 26-inch fat tyres for improved grip, comfort, and efficiency, and dual suspension — 80 mm in the front and 70 mm in the rear. Despite its dual-suspension frame and off-road intentions, the Xafari still manages to sport a rather sizeable luggage rack and a convenient kick-stand.

The thick, cast frame of the Xafari hides a rather large 913 Wh battery that feeds the 750 W, 80 Nm hub motor. Segway didn't provide any range figures for the Xafari, but it claims the battery and motor combo should outperform the average e-bike in the US.

Both the Xafari and the Xyber have some clever tricks, too, with auto-activating headlights, a dial to increase motor output, and a smart cockpit that can display everything from navigation to hill grade and trip data including speed, calories burned, cadence, and distance. It also has GPS tracking and Apple Find My tracking for added peace of mind.
