It has only been a month since Trendforce claimed that Samsung would be shipping over two million mini-LED TVs, with 55-inch to 85-inch screen sizes spoken of. However, LetsGoDigital has already spotted a new development in Samsung's moves to bring mini-LED TVs to market.
According to the Dutch website, Samsung has trademarked the name Samsung Quantum Mini-LED in Australia, as the screenshot below demonstrates. The trademark application explicitly states that the Quantum Mini LED is a class of TVs, so this will probably be the brand under which Samsung markets its first mini-LED TVs.
TVs with mini-LED panels should offer better contrast ratios, peak brightness levels and energy efficiency than contemporary LCD panels. Currently, mini-LED panels offer approximately 1,000 local dimming zones. Each LED measures between 0.1 to 0.2 mm, which is significantly smaller than the size of LEDs in current LCD panels.
LetsGoDigital believes that Samsung will unveil the first Quantum Mini LED TVs at CES 2021, which will be hosted in January 2021. The timing of this would make sense, in our opinion, as Samsung typically uses CES to showcase new TV technologies. Undoubtedly, these mini-LED TVs will be high-end models, probably Samsung's QLED TVs. Apple is expected to bring mini-LED devices to market next year too, so 2021 could mark the beginning of the switch away from IPS panels.
