Samsung hints at a surprising update for the Galaxy Watch 3
In May, Samsung announced that it would not update existing Galaxy Watch smartwatches to One UI Watch 3, the company's version of Wear OS 3. The company did commit to delivering three years of updates to Galaxy Watch smartwatches though, although this only includes the Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Galaxy Watch 3.
However, Samsung has now hinted that the Galaxy Watch 3 will receive its new smartwatch OS. As the image below shows, Samsung has advertised the Galaxy Watch 3 'with the Wear OS', contrary to its statement a few months ago. This could be a mistake on Samsung's part, but the timing of its release before today's Galaxy Unpacked event rules out it being a typo.
Theoretically, the Galaxy Watch 3 has enough performance to run Wear OS, given that the outdated Snapdragon Wear 3100 supposedly can. Samsung has form for upgrading a smartwatch to a new OS too, as it did with the Galaxy Gear. If Samsung plans to upgrade the Galaxy Watch 3 to One UI Watch 3, we imagine it will be sometime after it starts shipping the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.
