For owners of the Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra, the final major software upgrade for the device has begun its rollout across the globe. Samsung is now rolling out the One UI 8 update, which is based on Android 16 and represents the last new version of the Android operating system the 2022 flagship series will officially receive. The update has been spotted appearing for users in Europe and India, coming in as a substantial download of over 3 GB that also includes the latest September 1, 2025, security patch. The rollout is expected to expand gradually to more markets over the coming days and weeks.
This One UI 8 update is a bittersweet milestone, as it fulfills Samsung's original software support commitment for the Galaxy S22 line. The phones launched in 2022 with Android 12, and the move to Android 16 completes the four major Android upgrades that Samsung had promised for the series. This policy stands in contrast to the company's newer seven-year update promise for more recent flagships like the Galaxy S24 and S25 series, and it seems unlikely that Samsung will unexpectedly extend the support period for the S22.
A significant disappointment for users is that this One UI 8 update does not bring any of the new Galaxy AI features. The omission is particularly puzzling given that the Galaxy S23 FE, which received all the AI additions, uses the exact same Exynos 2200 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset that powers the S22 series. This leaves S22 owners with the latest operating system but without access to Samsung's newest intelligent software tools. Although major OS upgrades are finished, your Galaxy S22 is not completely out of support, as the devices will continue to receive security patches for at least another year. This security support will continue until sometime in 2026.
