Samsung is targeting heart and brain health with its newest research surrounding wearables, with AI-based LVSD detection via smartwatch and daily-use EEG for brain-computer interface applications - both validated by Korean clinical partners.

As per a new report from Samsung Electronics, the South Korean tech giant is developing wearable technologies to push clinical health management, especially focusing on heart and brain health.

Recent work includes smartwatches equipped with AI algorithms for detecting Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction (LVSD), a condition that contributes to half of all heart failure cases and has a survival rate of only 50% after diagnosis. These algorithms, which have been developed in partnership with Medical AI, utilize hospital-grade ECG analysis implemented in over 100 major hospitals in Korea and used on more than 120,000 patients monthly. This further led to regulatory approval from South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

Samsung has also introduced wearable brain-computer interface technology through an around-the-ear EEG device engineered with Hanyang University. This new device is compact and designed for continuous monitoring outside laboratory environments. Tests show video content preference prediction accuracy of 92.86% and drowsiness detection accuracy of 80%, which could have applications in areas such as neuromarketing, education, and productivity. The wearable EEG research was the sole feature article in the IEEE Sensors Journal (Vol. 25, Issue 18), Samsung states. According to project contributors, the technology may also be used in other fields, including entertainment and mental health management.

Samsung's primary objective here is to facilitate early diagnosis, lower hospitalization rates, and reduce healthcare costs through routine and accessible patient screening.
