i5 All-Rounder. The 15.6 incher, Samsung R580 Hawk, is supposed to combine performance with refined looks and even make gamers happy. Intel Core i5-520M and GeForce GT 330M are the names of the strong duo for entertainment fans. The R580, including a 500 GB hard disk and HD Ready display, doesn't even cost 825 euro. Interested? You'll discover all you need to know in our comprehensive review.
Samsung 15.6" R580 Multimedia Notebook
Source: Hot Hardware English Archive.org version
The R580 had some serious pros and some serious cons. It's priced really well for what it is, and its specifications are worthy of praise. But the real-world performance just wasn't there (application loading, specifically). We felt that the CPU really shined during intensive tasks, but we would've preferred a more snappy desktop experience to go with it. Also a 64-bit OS should have been included since it ships with 4GB of RAM, and we would've preferred a somewhat less vivid design.

Samsung R580 Notebook

I liked the touch of subdued colour of the unit, the battery state indication on the underside was an innovative feature, not so sure about the always on USB port as I only got four hours of life you could merrily charge several devices and find your notebook was flat. This feature does however mean one less or more less chargers to pack on a trip.

Samsung's R580 is a good value Core i3 laptop that's under $1000
Source: PC Authority English Archive.org version
Intel's Core i3 processors are set to power budget laptops to performance levels previously reserved for pricier portables, and Samsung's R580 is one of the first of this new breed. With dedicated graphics courtesy of Nvidia and a price tag that sneaks in below the $1000 mark , it looks set to bring portable power to the budget-conscious masses.

If there's one thing to like about the Samsung R580 it is its combination of affordability, power and performance. The Sony may indeed offer more, but for those who aren't really interested in having a Blu-ray drive, this is a fantastic choice that will last you for years.

So you want a laptop you can show off, that has a classy and attractive look to it? But you don't want to sacrifice power or pay over the odds? Look no further. Samsung's hefty machine may not be feather-light, but it's solid, efficient and worth its asking price.

A smaller version of the R780, the Samsung R580 brings, according to the company, "a touch of colour" to overall performance. Its configuration makes it a good allrounder and its attractive design means it sticks out from the crowd. A well designed all-rounder, the Samsung R580 is a good laptop but doesn't really stand out. We would certainly have appreciated a better screen and better sound.

If you’re on tighter budget than the circa-£600 retail price of the Samsung R580, and don’t plan to play many computer games, look for something like the £499 Samsung R530. But if you do need better graphics potential, or just appreciate the classier build quality and slick finish, the Samsung R580 is an easy choice for performance notebook computing at a reasonable price.

The R580 is an attractive machine: visually and on the basis of its specs and the performance they deliver. Occasional gamers will like it, as will film fans. Only the 13in-screen resolution on a 15in display disappoints.

Samsung hits many of the right spots with the R580. This notebook doesn’t quite have the graphics muscle of its larger sibling, but it does manage to balance power and portability. The inclusion of a Blu-ray drive kicks the price up to $829 at Best Buy—$30 more than the R780. Given its quality and the fact that the R580’s screen is less than full HD, we’d prefer a traditional DVD drive and a lower price instead. You’ll get better value and the same great design with the R780, but if a 17.3-inch screen is more than you need, the 15.6-inch Acer Aspire 5740G meets or beats the R580 in most performance tests and costs almost $100 less due to its lack of Blu-ray. Still, the Samsung R580 is a good pick if you’re looking for a notebook that’s stylish, powerful, and fairly mobile.

Watching high definition content is a popular pastime that's keeping desktop replacements in demand. Whether it's streaming content from Hulu or renting a Blu-ray title through Netflix, a laptop with a big screen is usually high on the priority list. The Samsung R580 ($850 list, at Best Buy) is the least expensive laptop I've seen that comes with an Intel Core i5 processor and a Blu-ray drive. Factor in a 500GB hard drive and a nice midrange graphics card, handing it an Editors' Choice in the desktop replacement category is the only logical step.

If you're after a good value, well-made laptop, a Samsung is always worth looking at. Today we're looking at the R580, a 15.6in desktop replacement laptop, which is among a slew of new laptops using one of Intel's new Core i3 processors meant to replace the Core 2 Duos of old for mainstream machines around the £500 to £600 mark. A combination of style, features, performance and value make the Samsung R580 a great, well-balanced all-rounder that will stand the test of time better than most.

With its abundant speed and good build quality, we are happy to recommend the Samsung R580 if you're after a desktop replacement notebook. It has four USB 2.0 ports (one is also an eSATA port), an ExpressCard/34 slot, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, a VGA port, a webcam and a DVD burner; these are standard facilities for a modern laptop. We just wish the screen had a higher resolution and that the keyboard was backlit.

Samsung's R580 is a great desktop replacement notebook. It's fast, looks good, is well built and has a good array of ports. You can use it to perform mundane office tasks or taxing file encoding tasks alike. We wish it wasn't such a glossy machine though, as it tends to collect fingerprints. It could use a backlit keyboard, which would help those of us who like to type in the dark.

Samsung R580 Notebook Evaluation

The Samsung R580 notebook is the first full notebook from Samsung that I've had the chance to review and overall I must say I'm pretty happy overall with what it had to offer. This notebook can be found online for ~$899 CAD which put it up against a ton of other competition but we found that thanks to all of the features Samsung has included it makes the R580 a pretty great "All-Around" laptop. Is the Samsung R580 the ultimate gaming laptop?

Samsung: Samsung Group is the largest South Korean conglomerate and was founded in 1938. Samsung Group employed 489,000 people in 2014 and is one of the world's largest companies in terms of revenue and market strength. The name Samsung means "Three Stars" in Korean and represents the three sons of the company's founder. The company was founded in 1938 as a grocery store. With its subsidiary Samsung Electronics, founded in 1969, Samsung took up the production of electrotechnical items, focusing on consumer electronics and household appliances at an early stage. Other branches in which the large corporation is active include mechanical engineering, automobiles (Hyundai), insurance, wholesale, real estate and leisure. Samsung manufactures a wide range of electronic products, including smartphones, televisions, home appliances and semiconductors. The company's Galaxy line of smartphones is one of the most popular in the world. Samsung is also a major player in the semiconductor industry, making memory chips and processors for many other electronics manufacturers.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M: The Nvidia GeForce GT 330M is the successor of the GT 230M and technically just a slightly higher clocked GT 240M (but it should still maintain the power envelope of the GT 230M as the naming suggests).

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 310M: The GeForce 310M is the successor of the GeFore G210M and based on the same chip with very similar clock rates (shader speed +30MHz to 1530MHz).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570: Lower middle-class GPU that features a low shader count and a 64 Bit memory bus but a high clock speed. Similar to the desktop Radeon 4550. Supports Avivo HD and DirectX 10.1.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470: Entry level DirectX 11 chip with GDDR5 support but only 80 shader cores. Supports Eyefinity (up to 4 monitors) and 8-ch HD audio over HDMI. Performance on par with the old GeForce 8600M GT.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i5:

520M:

The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

430M:

The Core i5-430M is a middle class dual core CPU that features only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Furthermore, VT-d, trusted Execution and AES features are missing in the 430M. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 500-733 MHz) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.

Intel Core i3:

370M: The Core i3-370M is a fast clocked Core i3. The TurboBoost, AES, VTd, and Trusted Execution functions are deactivated in the i3-series. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.4 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
