Rumors over the past have indicated Samsung's plans to give up on the 10x zoom lens. Those rumors appear to have some weight to them, too, with a new leak now revealing details of Samsung's zoom setup on its next-gen flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
As revealed by Ice Universe, Samsung is all but guaranteed to finally ditch the 10x zoom lens on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Reportedly, the S24 Ultra will feature two zoom lenses: a 10 MP 3x zoom camera, and a 50 MP 5x zoom lens. The 50 MP sensor on the 5x zoom lens is said to have a 1/2.52-inch size and 0.7μm pixels.
Those numbers may sound familiar. About a month ago, the same source claimed the Galaxy S23 Ultra's 10 MP sensor on its 3x zoom camera would be replaced by a 50 MP sensor with the aforementioned specs. It appears, however, that the prior report was inaccurate. Instead, the Galaxy S24 Ultra looks set to retain its predecessor's 3x zoom camera but make the switch to a 50 MP sensor beneath a 5x zoom lens.
The rationale behind such a choice is understandable. Samsung likely seeks to improve its mid-range zoom at the expense of the less useful 10x zoom seen on previous generations. How much it actually improves the end user's zoom experience remains to be seen when the Galaxy S24 Ultra finally debuts next year.

3x 10MP + 5x 50MP 1/2.52" 0.7μm
The hardware specifications are weaker than Xiaomi 13 Ultra, which is 50MP 1/2.52" 0.7μm for both 3x and 5x.
