Reviews for the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G
The Galaxy A52 5G is an updated version of one of the most successful Samsung smartphones. It comes with a price hike, which puts it above the 400-Euro (~$480) mark for the first time. Read our review to learn why it is still worth every cent.

The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G is a solid mid-ranger with a few predictable shortcomings. It competes well in a market that’s saturated with alternatives and could be a winner for Samsung. On the whole, the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G is a scrappy mid-ranger that offers a lot of value — far more than its predecessor. No $500 phone is without compromises, but none of the A52 5G’s shortcomings feel like total deal-breakers.

This, among other things, is one of the reasons why the A52 5G might actually be a more well-informed pick. The Pixel 4a, as much as it’s an astonishing mid-range handset in a bunch of areas, isn’t quite as versatile in the camera department. Don’t forget that it also has a smaller (60Hz) screen, no expandable storage and a slightly weaker processor, too. If you’re weighing up your options in the mid-range space, then the Galaxy A52 5G has absolutely scaled the ranks, disrupting the recent tradition of “Pixel is best”. As long as you can afford the extra £50, then you really can’t go wrong with picking up a Galaxy A52 5G instead.

There are also some things I really like about the Galaxy A52 5G, including its playful design, the 120Hz refresh rate and its versatile main 64MP camera. And the performance and battery life are very solid for the price. However, a couple of things frustrated me about this phone, including the easily scratched display. And while Samsung offers more cameras than the Pixel 4a 5G, Google’s phone tends to take better pics overall. While we've not put it head to head with the Pixel 5a yet, we'd imagine this statement holds true there too. The Google Pixel 4a 5G remains the better choice for the money, assuming you want 5G in your Android handset. Stepping down to the Nord N10 5G is probably only worth it if you're on a very tight budget. If you're very interested in the A52 5G's high refresh rate or its main camera, though, those are good enough reasons to go for this over the more well-rounded competition.

The only true downside of the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G is its lengthy charging time, particularly when compared to its rivals, and that is largely attributable to the Samsung’s 15W in-box charger (vs. 33W for the Xiaomi and 65W for the Oppo). With a compatible 25W charger, the charging experience would likely improve significantly. The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G provides more than two days of autonomy, and put in an especially good performance in our on the go tests.

Unfortunately, the Galaxy A52 5G is just priced unfavorably. There are many better or faster 5G phones at a similar or even cheaper price out there and while the promises of very long software support may be boosting the A52 5G's value proposition it still feels your are not getting the best bang for your buck. Not least because the regular A52 with the same kind of support and largely the same feature set is that much cheaper. Samsung can make the Galaxy A52 5G an attractive offer by applying a price cut as it has done in some markets. In most places, however, you are better off spending your money elsewhere.

For the most part, Samsung pulled the right strings in making the A52 an excellent midrange device; the screen is large, vibrant, and snappy, the battery life is just plain incredible, and the camera delivers sufficient quality that rounds out this phone's experience. The main competitor of this phone isn't from another brand, but from Samsung itself. The Galaxy A52 exists in a space where you can still pick up the S20 FE, and if the rumors are true, Samsung is set to release the Galaxy S21 FE later this summer, and the price difference between the S20 FE and the A52 is marginally thin, especially if you consider the promotions Samsung and its carriers run all year-round.

As with any phone, even a good one, not everything is roses and sunshine. The in-screen fingerprint reader is so annoying to use that I preferred to enter my PIN to unlock the phone. The mediocre macro camera seems like a frivolous add-on that is only there to boost the total number of cameras on the phone. More is definitely not better. There are many duplicate apps like Samsung's version of an internet browser and photo gallery app in addition to the ones from Google. But after two months, when I step back and consider everything, the Galaxy A52 5G is an all-around good phone with some great features and a few minor and annoying flaws. It's a solid buy for $500, but as I write this review, you can get a Galaxy A52 5G unlocked on Samsung's website for $425, which makes it even harder to pass up.

The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G ($499.99) has big shoes to fill: Samsung customers are expecting a lot of value from the successor to the Galaxy A51, one of the top-selling phones of 2020. For the most part, the Galaxy A52 5G delivers, with a gorgeous 120Hz AMOLED display, 5G connectivity, an ambitious camera array, and solid battery life. What’s missing, however, is performance. The A52 5G is a bit sluggish when compared with the Google Pixel 4a 5G ($499) or even the Moto G Stylus 5G ($399.99).

The A52 5G could be brighter in most tested conditions, which is true in the video use case as well. The device does not read 60 fps UHD content, which is inconvenient for some, and its ghost touches are something gamers will notice right away. But despite a few quirks, the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G delivers good quality and performance for the price. Its colors are accurate, especially in outdoor conditions, and it retains good details without degrading content, especially in direct sunlight. Web browsing feels smooth.

The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G punched above its weight class in terms of the quality of the sound it produces in playback, and did reasonably well as a recording device too. With an exceptional artifacts score, good timbre performance, and strong spatial performance, the device provides good value in playback. As a recording device, it performed well in terms of overall timbre score, but has some shortcomings, including mono recording in the memo app and not capturing sufficient loudness in life videos.

I didn’t find much to complain about with the Galaxy A52 5G. The build quality could be better, and I would have preferred a telephoto lens over the nearly-useless 5MP macro. Samsung’s software also remains as polarizing as ever — while some (like me) generally prefer One UI over stock Android, it’s definitely not a perfect experience. The abundance of features can feel overwhelming, and the advertisements in system applications like Samsung Pay and Weather are still inexcusable. Overall, the Galaxy A52 5G is one of the strongest budget phones we’ve seen yet out of Samsung, especially in the United States. It’s a great package for the typical price of $500, and if you can get it on sale, that’s even better.

The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G is a high-end smartphone that sits just behind the A72 5G in the South Korean manufacturer’s more affordable A-series lineup. It features an FHD+ 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display and a 4500 mAh battery with 25W super-fast charging. The Android OS is powered by an octa-core processor with 6GB RAM, and there’s 128 GB of internal storage that’s expandable to 1 TB via Micro SD. The handset is also IP67 rated for water and dust resistance. For photography, the device features a quad rear camera including a 64 MP primary module and a 12 MP ultra-wide. A 5 MP macro and 5 MP depth sensor for bokeh simulation complete the shooting options. Let’s see how the device performs in our DXOMARK Camera tests.

The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G isn’t going to blow you away with top-end specs or a remarkably affordable price, but it’s still a solid choice for a mid-range handset that can compete with the likes of the Google Pixel 4a. It’s a difficult phone to love, but if you’re looking for a lot for a lower price point than most other Samsung devices, you may enjoy what the Galaxy A52 5G has to offer.

The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G is the best smartphone $500 can buy today. It offers top-tier features and a great user experience at an agreeable price point. I also tip my hat to Samsung for committing to provide 4 years’ worth of timely security updates for the A52. It's rare to see this level of support available for Android's cheaper phones. For comparison, a $500 budget will get you an entry-level iPhone XR with less storage (64GB), one rear-facing camera, and no 5G. The Google Pixel 4a 5G also costs the same, but it’s nowhere near as feature-packed. It isn’t waterproof, either. At this price point, the Galaxy A52 5G is the one to beat.

The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G gets more right than it gets wrong. It offers solid build quality, a pleasing display, excellent battery life, and a capable main camera. It's not the most performant mid-ranger out there and the secondary cameras underwhelm, but if you're in the market for a $500 phone with 5G, the Galaxy A52 5G is up there with the best.

Samsung's Galaxy A52 5G really shows how far mid-range Android phones have come. It has a great screen, decent, cameras, all-day battery life, and pretty snappy performance. The problem is that at $500, it has a lot of competition, including from Samsung itself. The S20 FE can be found new for $599, or with a discount or trade-in for as low as $399, and it has a better screen, processor, and camera setup. Add in some great phones from OnePlus in a similar range, and even the iPhone 11 for around the same price, and while the A52 5G is good, that might not be enough.

The Galaxy A52 5G sweats on the details, with a fine 120Hz AMOLED display, an IP67-rated body, a competent OIS-laden camera and the promise of four years of security updates. There’s better value to be had, however, if not quite the same sense of security.

Samsung continues to offer up a compelling mid-range phone with a near-flagship experience in the Galaxy A52 5G. With a large 120Hz screen, 4500mAh battery that will last all day even with heavy use, it's the 5G phone under $500 to beat.

What I didn’t love — the cluttered software, fussy fingerprint sensor, a tendency toward oversaturated color in photos — feels more forgivable when the phone gets the nonnegotiable stuff right. The Pixel 4A 5G is probably this device’s closest competition, and it beats the A52 5G on camera quality and a cleaner UI, but it’s a smaller device without a fancy fast refresh rate screen. Depending on how you feel about either of those things, the 4A 5G might be the better pick for you.

With so much to offer at under $550, phones like the Galaxy A52 and its competitors might start to eat into the appeal that flagship phones once held a strong grip. Is this the end of ultra-expensive phones? Or is this just the beginning as top-end phone models start to explore the realms of multi-displays, foldable display, rollable display and other such leading-edge experiences? We tend to think there’s a push for the latter as more brands are debuting showcase devices that we may one day pine for. Till then, the mainstream audience stands to benefit from the continual process and technological improvements to bring devices like the Samsung Galaxy A52 at ever more palatable price points.

Prices for major markets like the US and India have not been announced yet, but the Galaxy A52 5G is selling for around the equivalent of $510 in Europe, the UK, and Hong Kong. At this price, the phone should be a top contender for one of the best mid-tier phones — in North America and South Korea. Samsung has one of the widest retail networks for an Android smartphone brand, and in a fair few places, the Galaxy A52 might be the only viable option that consumers will be able to buy. In markets like Asia, the Galaxy A52 5G will have a lot of competition, though Samsung’s combination of proven quality, brand reputation, and marketing prowess should make this another top seller.
