Reviews for the Samsung Galaxy A13 4G
At below 200 USD, the Samsung Galaxy A13 4G offers a Full HD screen and Wi-Fi 5. However, it faces strong competition. Are the improvements compared to last year's model enough to make it competitive?

The previous Galaxy A12 has been kicking around for a while now, and it’s certainly a bit outdated by modern standards. It didn’t initially receive a recommendation in our review, but with 2022 updates to the cameras, design and software, the Galaxy A13 was perfectly positioned to finally make an appearance on our best budget smartphones list. Except Samsung really missed the mark with this one. Its decision to opt for one of the weakest mobile chipsets we’ve tested in quite some time is a baffling one, and the lack of 5G connectivity is a glaring omission as well. Neither the extra ultrawide camera nor the 1080p screen are enough of an incentive to mask the fact that we’re getting the short end of the stick. It might be dirt cheap, but don’t let Samsung fool you – you can do better for the price.

The Samsung Galaxy A13 has decent specs and provides a good user experience, especially for daily tasks such as messaging applications and internet browsing. It's a decent option at RM799 if you want to get this for old folks who aren't tech-savvy, as it's easy to use. Of course, some smartphones are cheaper or have better specs at the same price. For example, the OPPO A57 is more affordable at RM699, albeit with a less impressive camera setup (13MP + 2MP). There's also the Infinix Note 12 (RM749), a smartphone that performs as well as the Galaxy A13. It lacks the 8MP ultra-wide camera but features a 16MP selfie camera instead. Ultimately, it comes down to your preferences. For many, the Samsung Galaxy A13 works well enough, looks decent, and is a product from a reliable brand. That last reason alone is enough for some smartphone users.

Samsung Galaxy A13 (SM-A137) was announced in June 2022 and caters to the upper mid-range segment. The phone holds a 6.6 inches PLS LCD display panel with a 400-pixel density. Besides this, the device runs on Android 12 OS supported by One UI 4.1 user interface. In terms of hardware, you get the 12nm Mediatek MT6769V/CU Helio G80 chipset that can reach up to a 2.0GHz clocking speed. Furthermore, the Galaxy S13 is available in 3GB/4GB RAM with 32GB/64GB/128GB internal storage. Alongside this, you also get an SD card slot to extend storage. Unfortunately, Gorilla glass protection is missing on the phone. The so-called quad-camera setup on the Galaxy A13 (SM-A137) includes the 50MP primary, 5MP ultrawide, 2MP macro, and a 2MP depth lens. Apart from this, you get an 8MP selfie lens on the front, while you can record 1080p videos at 30 fps from both cameras without any gyro-EIS support. The phone has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication and other necessary comms and sensors.

Finally, for the price of RM799, this is a decent phone. It’s pretty standard in terms of what it can do and combined with some additional features from Samsung’s One UI Core, it’s a pretty good deal.

The Samsung Galaxy A13 adds a surprising amount of features and value for what you pay for that edge out the competition in its price range. You get a large FHD+ display, expandable storage, the latest Android 12 running under the hood, a 3.5mm audio jack and excellent battery life for RM799. If you’re on a tight budget and need a reliable Samsung-issued budget phone, you can’t go wrong with this. If you’re on a much more modest budget, the Galaxy A03 is worth a look which offers less RAM, a lower resolution display, less storage and a smaller camera for RM549. The Samsung Galaxy A13 is a budget phone that has a large LCD display paired with excellent battery life. Add in a 3.5mm audio jack as well as expandable storage which its larger siblings lack and it makes a compelling proposition for those seeking a budget Samsung workhorse phone.

Besides its very appealing price, the Samsung Galaxy A13 only manages to be 'good enough' in most of the areas that matter for a smartphone (from the camera to the battery life) – but for some users that's going to make it a tempting, value-for-money deal.

The Galaxy A13 should be a slam dunk for Samsung. Anyone looking for a budget phone will see the brand, the low price and think it’s a safe bet. But with such poor performance compared to certain rivals, it isn’t. As long as you’re happy to accept that this isn’t going to feel like a fast device and you’re tempted by the good main camera and Samsung OneUI, then at the discounted prices you’ll find from retailers, it’s just about worth buying. But for the Galaxy A13’s RRP, you can get far better performance as well as luxuries such as a 90Hz AMOLED screen, making it difficult to recommend it over the aforementioned Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 and Moto G31. There are trade-offs to make with any cheap phone, so be sure to read our reviews and our roundup of the best budget phones before making your final choice.

There is a lot that can go wrong when creating a phone, especially a budget one. The trouble is that most of these devices look very similar on paper. You have to spend some time with them to uncover any issues hidden beneath the surfaces and unfortunately we located a few pretty major ones on the Galaxy A13. It's a real shame since the Galaxy A13 still delivers in other key aspects. It has stellar battery life, and its cameras, while not exactly impressive, benefit from mature processing and deliver decent results. We just can't recommend the Galaxy A13, especially since Samsung itself has other better and more well-rounded Galaxy devices in the same price range to get instead.

The Samsung Galaxy A12 is the best-selling Android smartphone for 2021, and the Galaxy A13 does have big shoes to fill in various markets including the Philippines. It’s more expensive than its predecessor, but the Galaxy A13 does get a slew of upgrades–including a design makeover–to shape itself as a promising contender in the already-saturated budget segment.

It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.

69.32%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
