The Samsung Ativ Book 5 is a respectable, subdued entry in the mid-range Ultrabook market. Everything about the system is conservative, from design to specifications. And for some, that may be a boon. This is a simple, functional workhorse best suited for users who just want to get some basic work done.

The Samsung ATIV Book 5 is the latest Windows 8 powered touch screen laptop. It's extremely portable and offers extra long battery life, a comfortable keyboard and good performance. The design of the Samsung ATIV Book 5 is one of its selling points. The black chassis is made of aluminum and it looks elegant, yet robust. The lid, however, does show fingerprints rather easily. The keyboard deck is made of glossy black plastic, which does look good against the aluminum finish.

If you like the idea of owning a portable Windows 8 touch notebook with long battery life, the $849 Samsung ATIV Book 5 is a solid choice. The 4.4-pound laptop features a sturdy aluminum design, above-average audio and a comfortable keyboard and touchpad. We also like how this system integrates with Galaxy phones.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.

67.5%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
