The Samsung Ativ Book 5 is a respectable, subdued entry in the mid-range Ultrabook market. Everything about the system is conservative, from design to specifications. And for some, that may be a boon. This is a simple, functional workhorse best suited for users who just want to get some basic work done.

The Samsung ATIV Book 5 is the latest Windows 8 powered touch screen laptop. It's extremely portable and offers extra long battery life, a comfortable keyboard and good performance. The design of the Samsung ATIV Book 5 is one of its selling points. The black chassis is made of aluminum and it looks elegant, yet robust. The lid, however, does show fingerprints rather easily. The keyboard deck is made of glossy black plastic, which does look good against the aluminum finish.

If you like the idea of owning a portable Windows 8 touch notebook with long battery life, the $849 Samsung ATIV Book 5 is a solid choice. The 4.4-pound laptop features a sturdy aluminum design, above-average audio and a comfortable keyboard and touchpad. We also like how this system integrates with Galaxy phones.

Turn the page. The Samsung Ativ Book 5 is a slim, yet sturdy 14-inch touchscreen Ultrabook based on a previous-generation Ivy Bridge processor. How does the sleek looking system with its dual-core i5 CPU and integrated graphics card stack up against the competition?

Samsung's ATIV Book 5 may not be the big redesign that the name implies but it takes a solid design and upgrades it with a new touchscreen display and some amazing battery life. There are a number of elements of the system though that drag down the system from being excellent including a dim display with viewing angle issues, just a single USB 3.0 port and only 4GB of memory.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

74.13%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
