Retro Song Bird: New accessory for Game Boy cartridges announced

The Retro Song Bird is set to arrive in late 2026, offering music playback and archiving from classic Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. As on the Game Boy, cartridges slot into the top of the device, which has a built-in speaker. Designed as a dedicated music player for chiptune enthusiasts and collectors, it reads audio tracks directly from the original cartridges and plays them through accurate emulation.
The manufacturer says the hardware supports playback from more than 1,900 titles, along with additional tools for digital music production. These include routing the Game Boy's four sound channels into separate USB audio streams for use in digital audio workstations (DAWs). It also supports running Little Sound DJ (LSDj) directly and playing soundtracks created with GB Studio.
Retro Song Bird does more than play music
A built-in stereo line output allows audio to be sent to external sound systems. When connected to Wi-Fi, the device provides access to a web page where users can browse and play individual tracks. Music and sound effects are listed separately, and each can be selected individually. While the Lego set has brought the Game Boy back to a broader audience, the Retro Song Bird is aimed more at dedicated Nintendo fans and tech enthusiasts.
For archiving music from physical cartridges, the device offers tools to back up and restore game saves, create ROM backups and write to compatible memory cards. It can also generate and save WAV files from game music. An alarm clock function is planned as well, using music from whichever cartridge is currently inserted as the alarm.
A browser-based mode is also planned for playing cartridge games through emulation, with support for Game Genie and Game Shark cheat codes. Another planned feature would allow the Game Boy Camera to function as a USB webcam. The manufacturer provides an open API for further development, while updates over Wi-Fi are intended to add features in the future. Pricing for the Retro Song Bird has yet to be announced.
