Smartphone Android Business Charts Foldable

Foldable smartphones have evolved from a gimmick into a genuine alternative to traditional smartphones. Thanks to sturdier hinges, more durable displays, and powerful hardware, latest-generation models offer both innovative form factors and palpable practical value for everyday use.

Whether a compact flip phone or a book-style smartphone that unfolds to become a small tablet, modern foldables combine flexibility with top-of-the-line features. The first tri-foldables with triple-folding displays could be showing us what to expect in the future, but so far they are only available in limited quantities and in few markets.

In this list, we present the best foldable smartphones from our in-depth tests and compare them in terms of display, performance, camera, battery life, build quality, and value for money.

Editor's comment

The number of foldable smartphones is on the rise. That’s enough of a reason to organize them neatly by launching a new Ranking. Even though the list isn’t yet fully stocked, new foldables from Samsung are coming, and Apple also plans to unleash its first foldable smartphone on planet Earth this year.

Our first winner ever comes from Honor; the Motorola Razr Fold and the Vivo X Fold6, among other promising candidates, are undergoing our tests as of late July.

1st place - Honor Magic V6

The Magic V6 is the best foldable we know of at Notebookcheck
ⓘ Daniel Schmidt
Honor Magic V6

The Magic V6 is one of the most impressive foldable smartphones currently available. It sets new standards, particularly in terms of body thinness and weight. Despite being slim, it offers a virtually uncompromising feature set, including two high-quality OLED displays, powerful hardware, and a long-lasting silicon-carbon battery that supports both wired and wireless fast charging.

The Magic V6 is a foldable which cuts few to no corners.

In everyday use, the product impresses with fast system performance, solid build quality, and versatile triple camera making for high-quality photos in most situations. IP69 water resistance certification and a seven-year software update guarantee come included, too. There are, however, a few minor shortcomings: The inner display doesn’t get particularly bright when used outdoors, and during prolonged heavy use, performance throttling occurs due to rising temperatures. However, these issues are hardly noticeable in everyday use, making the Honor Magic V6 (buy from Honor Germany) one of the best foldables currently on the market.

2nd place - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7

The Galaxy Z Fold7 is a very good foldable
ⓘ Daniel Schmidt
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7

With the Galaxy Z Fold7, Samsung is taking a major step forward. The foldable is significantly slimmer and lighter than its predecessors without cutting performance or features. Its bright 8-inch OLED display, powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, and upgraded 200-MP main camera ensure first-class user experience.

This is one of the most mature foldables currently on the market and, with its significantly slimmer design, it addresses the biggest issue of earlier generations.

It also comes with IP48 certification, seven years of software updates, and consistently high system performance in everyday use. Despite its comparatively small battery, the Fold7 delivers solid battery life thanks to good energy efficiency. However, it isn’t entirely without flaws. Under prolonged heavy use, the phone's SoC throttles more than certain rival phones due to its slim design. Speakers are now slightly weaker than on its predecessor; and support for the S Pen has been removed.

3rd place - Oppo Find N6

The Find N6 is a good foldable smartphone
ⓘ Daniel Schmidt
Oppo Find N6

With its Find N6, Oppo shows how sophisticated foldables have become. The virtually crease-free inner display is one of the smartphone’s greatest selling points which, together with its high-quality build, sleek design, and long battery life, is sure to put a happy smile on the customer's face. Its rear camera system is also impressive; the primary and telephoto lenses, in particular, deliver high image quality. A Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 ensures plenty of performance for everyday use.

Oppo's Find N6 is one of the best foldables available today. The nearly invisible display crease, the powerful camera, and the long battery life set new standards for the product category.

That being said, we do have our gripes with it. Under sustained load, the processor throttles significantly; the ultra-wide-angle camera falls short compared to the other sensors; furthermore, its speakers don’t quite live up to premium standards. Additionally, it lacks full dust and liquid protection. Availability in Europe is limited, too.

4th place - Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7

The Galaxy Z Flip7 is a good foldable smartphone
ⓘ Daniel Schmidt
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7

A close look at the Galaxy Z Flip7 reveals that the Flip series has matured while at the same time losing some of its unique selling points. This compact foldable's key traits are its larger 4.1-inch external display, high-quality build, IP48 certification, and bright foldable OLED panel. Battery life has also received improvements compared to the previous-gen model. The in-house Exynos 2500 SoC delivers sufficient performance for everyday life, and Samsung's long seven-year software update guarantee is appealing as well.

The Galaxy Z Flip7 proves to be a well-designed, high-quality foldable smartphone with strong design, long-term software support, and further polished usability.

Despite these advances, Samsung still lags behind the competition. At 4,300 mAh, the product's battery remains comparatively small, and it charges slowly, too. The Exynos chip can’t keep up with the latest top-of-the-line Snapdragon SoCs, besides, under heavy sustained loads, there is significant performance throttling. The visible crease and the lack of a telephoto camera also do little to help the phone feel truly premium.

5th place - Vivo X Fold5

The X Fold 5 is, like most other options listed here, a showcase of how far large-display foldable phones have come. This model combines an extremely thin and lightweight body with an 8.03-inch OLED display and a lovely secondary external display. The two 120-Hz LTPO panels please eyes with their image quality and high brightness. The Fold's impressive build quality, low weight, and Zeiss camera system are also among the device’s major selling points. Three 50-MP cameras on the back produce excellent images for a foldable, and can compete with traditional bar-format high-end smartphones.

The Vivo X Fold5 is an impressively pocketable foldable with one of the best designs in the product class.

Processing duties are handled by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which offers plenty of headroom for everyday use. However, our testing revealed significant issues with heat. When stressed heavily, the chip throttles significantly, resulting in performance losses. Battery life also falls short of expectations, despite the large battery capacity. It also remains unclear how Vivo plans to handle software updates in the long term.

The foldable is purchasable at TradingShenzhen among other sellers.

6th place - Huawei Mate X7

The Mate X7 is a good foldable smartphone
ⓘ Marcus Herbrich
Huawei Mate X7

Huawei's Mate X7 demonstrates neatly how much technology can be packed into an extremely thin foldable device nowadays. With a body only about 4.5 millimeters thick, high-quality OLED displays, and premium build, this foldable smartphone is among the most elegant products in this class. Its rear camera system is particularly impressive: A 50-MP primary camera with variable aperture, along with a 50-MP periscope telephoto lens, deliver exceptionally good image quality for a foldable, finding their place among the product’s key selling points.

The Huawei Mate X7 is an impressive foldable with one of the best camera setups in its class, and an exceptionally slim design.

Battery life is also solid. Stereo speakers and a large 8-inch inner display ensure pleasant media consumption experience. A Kirin 9030 Pro offers sufficient performance for everyday use and multitasking, but can’t keep up with the latest Snapdragon flagship SoCs.

Its biggest weaknesses are its features: The Mate X7 does not support 5G, Google Play Store is not integrated, and overall, software is not ideal. Additionally, the phone's performance lags behind what its more expensive rivals have to offer.

7th place - Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a good foldable smartphone
ⓘ Marcus Herbrich
Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a significantly more refined foldable than its predecessor, winning hearts above all with its high-quality build, bright OLED displays, and signature Pixel software. The attractive, albeit rather bulky, design, improved hinge, and long update support make this foldable smartphone suitable for real-world everyday use. Its cameras are among the best in the foldable phone category; the three rear sensors deliver strong results in daylight, benefiting from Google’s image processing, and offering practical features like 5x zoom. In poor lighting, however, the comparatively small sensors reach their limits.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a successful foldable smartphone with excellent software, impressive displays, and a very good camera.

Battery life and speakers are also impressive, while the Tensor G4 delivers sufficient performance for everyday tasks. For a premium device costing nearly 1,900 euros, however, the Tensor SoC seems underpowered, besides, throttling occurs under heavy load. More drawbacks: Big display bezels, PWM flickering, and the lack of stylus support.

8th place - Motorola Razr 60 Ultra

The Razr 60 Ultra is a good foldable smartphone
ⓘ Florian Schmitt
Motorola Razr 60 Ultra

The Razr 60 Ultra is one of the most exciting flip smartphones of the year, combining retro charm with modern, high-end technology. Particularly striking are its high-quality materials such as Alcantara and wood-grain finishes, large 4-inch external display, and 7-inch pOLED inner display with virtually no crease.

Both screens impress with high brightness and a smooth 165-Hz refresh rate. A Snapdragon 8 Elite delivers true top-tier performance, for the first time with the Razr series, while a larger 4,700-mAh battery ensures exceptionally long battery life. Fast charging, Wi-Fi 7, and eSIM support are also part of its impressive feature set.

The Razr 60 Ultra is one of the best flip-foldables of its time. It deserves your attention with its exceptional design, powerful battery, plenty of performance, and a versatile external display.

When it comes to cameras, the Razr has its pros and cons. Its 50-MP sensors take good photos but don’t quite reach "chocolate bar" flagships. Under heavy load, the slim body becomes very warm to the touch, and in some cases, significant performance throttling occurs. We also have criticism to voice regarding the slow USB 2.0 port, and the relatively short update support period.

9th place - Motorola Razr 70

The Razr 70 is a good foldable smartphone
ⓘ Florian Schmitt
Motorola Razr 70

The Razr 70 focuses primarily on style and individuality. This compact flip phone stands out with its casing material choices, high-quality and colorful finish options, and eye-catching visual design. Build quality is excellent, the hinge feels well-engineered, and both displays impress with high brightness and smooth performance. The additional camera use options made possible by the flip format are particularly practical, as an example, for taking photos from unusual angles.

The Motorola Razr 70 is a smartphone for design enthusiasts looking for an extraordinary foldable with high brand recognition.

Hardware-wise, however, the Razr 70 is not as premium as its appearance might suggest. Its mid-range processor offers limited performance reserves, and despite improvements, battery life still can’t keep up with many competing foldables. Although the camera has received minor improvements, it doesn’t go head-to-head with true flagship phones. Added to this are shortcomings such as the lack of water resistance, slow USB 2.0 port, and few years of software updates.
