Deal | RTX 4070-powered ROG Strix G17 gaming laptop with Ryzen 9 and 240 Hz display discounted to lowest-ever price

Although RTX 50 "Blackwell"-powered gaming laptops are closer than ever, affordability at launch likely won't be their strongest suit. Considering some of the major discounts that RTX 40-powered laptops are getting during this holiday season, there is certainly great value to be extracted. For instance, the 17.3-inch Asus ROG Strix G17 gaming laptop with powerful internals and an excellent display can now be purchased for its lowest-ever price on B&H Photo Video, at just $1,299.

But be warned - this is a laptop that is aimed squarely at those looking for a desktop replacement gaming machine, and is certainly not a good fit for boardroom or business scenarios, thanks to its highly gamer-centric design. Its excellent 240 Hz QHD display boasts a whopping 98.3% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut as per our detailed inspection of the device, making it a great choice for the "gamer by night, creator by day" crowd, provided that portability is not a concern. Those who require mobility, will be much better served with something like the MSI Stealth 14 gaming laptop.

In terms of performance, there is hardly any room for criticism. The 16-core Ryzen 9 7940HX is one of the fastest mobile chips on the market in multi-threaded workloads, although not quite so in single-threaded performance. Both the 16 GB memory and 1 TB SSD are user-upgradeable, so no complaints in that regard. A 140-watt (115 W+ 25 W) RTX 4070 Laptop GPU takes care of the graphics, and if our comprehensive review of the 7945HX-variant is anything to go by, the system performs just as well as one would expect it to. Combined with the aforementioned 240 Hz display, gamers are in for a treat. 

That said, there are a few somewhat negative aspects of the ROG Strix G17 that are worth noting. First and foremost, the otherwise excellent display fails to get bright enough, peaking at around 338 nits. Contrast and response times are decent, but not nearly as great as OLED panels, which can be excused considering its price. As mentioned previously, hauling around the bulky, 6-pound (2.7 kg) 17.3-inch beast is no easy task. All said, the ROG Strix G17, at its current sale price undoubtedly brings outstanding value to the table.
