Purism Librem 16 launches with two privacy sliders and PureOS
At first glance, the Purism Librem 16 looks like a conventional 16-inch laptop, with Purism opting for a modern-looking aluminum chassis that is 2.6 centimeters thick and weighs 1.8 kilograms. However, the laptop offers a few unusual features, led by two privacy sliders located directly above the keyboard.
The left slider disables both the webcam and the microphones, while the right slider disconnects all wireless connections. According to Purism, the relevant components are disconnected via hardware, so malware has no way of bypassing them. The Librem 16 ships with PureOS, a Debian-based version of Linux that is said to have been specifically enhanced for stability and data protection. The laptop can be unlocked using the so-called Librem Key, an encrypted USB dongle, rather than a password.
The hardware is a bit dated, as Purism uses an Intel Core i7-13620H with six performance cores and four efficiency cores. It also features up to 64 GB of DDR4 RAM and an SSD with a maximum capacity of 16 TB. The 16-inch IPS panel has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels. The battery has a capacity of 54.2 Wh. The laptop features two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI, Ethernet, and a microSD slot.
Pricing and availability
The Purism Librem 16 is now available in the manufacturer’s online store. The base model with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD costs $2,899, while the manufacturer lists the top-of-the-line model with 64 GB of RAM and 16 TB of storage at $9,799. Purism ships worldwide, but prices do not include shipping costs, import sales tax, and customs duties.
