Sony recently increased the prices of the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal due to the ongoing memory crisis. And it seems like things are only going to get worse for gamers.

Sony recently raised the prices of several PlayStation products due to the ongoing memory crisis that continues to affect the entire tech industry. The standard PS5 now costs $649.99, while the PS5 Pro has jumped to $899.99. Even the PlayStation Portal received a price increase. And unfortunately, things may get even more expensive in the future.

A $1,000-plus PS6 seems possible

During a recent Q&A session focused on Sony's Game & Network Services division, company executives were asked about their current approach to hardware pricing and profitability. More importantly, investors wanted to know whether Sony plans to continue prioritizing profits on hardware when it launches its next-generation platform. Sony's response, however, wasn't exactly reassuring for anyone hoping for an affordable PS6.

The company explained that it can no longer absorb all of the rising component costs and has already increased prices in several regions outside Japan. However, Sony also said that demand for its products has remained strong despite the higher prices. Most importantly, the company made it clear that it does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses. Sony added that it will continue monitoring the market and adjust its pricing strategy while making sure customers understand the value of its products.

This statement paints an interesting picture for the PS6. Sony has not officially announced the next-gen console yet, but multiple leaks and rumors suggest that it could launch sometime in 2027 or early 2028. As for its price, previous reports and rumors have suggested that the PS6 could cost around $1,000, which now seems possible.

The memory crisis is currently showing no signs of slowing down. Analysts expect memory prices to surge twice again during the second half of 2026, with additional increases potentially continuing into 2027. Since memory and storage are essential components for modern consoles, manufacturers will likely face even higher production costs. As a result, current-generation consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X could see further price hikes in the coming months.

And if memory prices remain high when the PS6 launches, Sony's latest comments suggest that the company may simply pass those higher costs onto consumers instead of taking a loss on the hardware. In other words, while nothing is official yet, a $1,000-plus PS6 is starting to look like a real possibility rather than just another rumor.
