Orange Pi has returned to the single-board computer (SBC) space after releasing the Orange Pi RV in April. This time, the company has delivered the R2S, which measures 79 x 46 mm to accommodate four Gigabit Ethernet ports. Not to be confused with NanoPi R2S (curr. $39.99 on Amazon), the Orange Pi R2S is actually an extension of the RV and RV2 that have been available for a few months.
To that end, the Orange Pi R2S leverages the same Ky X1 RISC-V based chipset as the Orange Pi RV2 that contains an octa-core CPU, up to 2 TOPS of theoretical AI performance and BXE-2-32 graphics. On top of that, the Orange Pi R2S integrates LPDDR4X RAM and eMMC flash storage coupled with USB Type-C for 5V/3A power and a pair of USB Type-A ports. For reference the new SBC is compatible with Ubuntu and OpenWrt, the latter so that the R2S can be used as a compact router.
Currently, the Orange Pi R2S starts at around $30 with 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage. Alternatively, Orange Pi has created 4 GB and 8 GB of RAM SKUs for $10 surcharges apiece, albeit with the same amount of storage. For the time being, the company is only offering its new SBC via AliExpress, although it seems that Amazon listings are forthcoming. Please see Orange Pi's website for more information.
