OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT Health, a new feature within the ChatGPT app that lets users connect external accounts like Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Function, Weight Watchers, AllTrails, Instacart, and Peloton for personalized health insights. The company says that this new feature was "designed in close collaboration with physicians" to "help people take a more active role in understanding and managing their health and wellness."
Internal data from OpenAI reveals that over 230 million people globally already query ChatGPT regarding health and wellness, so this new feature aims to provide a safer, more structured place for those interactions. Connecting sensitive medical data to an AI platform requires strict security measures, which OpenAI addresses through "purpose-built encryption and isolation" to keep these conversations "protected and compartmentalized."
The company explicitly promises that it will not utilize your Health chats to train its models, and it suggests enabling multi-factor authentication if you prefer additional security for your account. For users interested in connecting actual medical records, OpenAI is partnering with b.well, described as "the largest and most secure network of live, connected health data for US consumers," which "adheres to the highest industry standards in data security and privacy."
ChatGPT Health can interpret complex lab results in easy-to-understand language, analyze data from wearables, summarize care instructions, or even prepare questions for an upcoming doctor's appointment. To access this feature, users can simply select it from the sidebar menu within the main ChatGPT interface. Availability remains limited for the moment, with ChatGPT Health currently accessible only to "a small group of early users" and completely excluding the UK, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area. While general wellness features may expand, the deeper medical record integrations are currently exclusive to the US.
