PayPal announced today, October 28, 2025 that it has partnered with OpenAI to bring Instant Checkout payments to ChatGPT via the ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol). PayPal payments will now be available through ChatGPT's Instant Checkout feature. This means that ChatGPT users will be able to purchase goods and services directly from a ChatGPT session.
Last month, OpenAI rolled out the Agentic Commerce Protocol as an open-source standard for eCommerce platforms to hook directly into ChatGPT, giving users a seamless purchase experience. Etsy was the first platform to adopt ACP. Apart from PayPal, Shopify is also set to adopt the protocol soon. Earlier this month, Walmart and OpenAI announced a similar partnership, with Walmart shoppers getting the option of making purchases via Instant Checkout.
Over the next year, PayPal is set to provide more value to ChatGPT users—PayPal merchants will soon have their products and services visible in ChatGPT searches, without specific vendor integrations.
What does this mean for online shoppers? ChatGPT searches such as "What are the best sub-$1000 gaming laptops?" will soon provide users with the means to make a direct purchase without even visiting the vendor's website. With over 800 million people using ChatGPT worldwide and over 400 million PayPal users, wider adoption of Instant Checkout may mark a pivotal moment for eCommerce on the whole.
