Final Fantasy fans on PC and Xbox might still be able to get their hands on the much-anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake. Despite Square Enix earlier saying they "had no plans for other platforms," official box art indicates that Remake is slated to be a 1-year PS4 timed exclusive.

Final Fantasy fans on PC and Xbox have cause to celebrate. Square Enix recently revealed the official box art for Final Fantasy VII Remake. The front cover features the "Play First on PS4" logo. This means that Final Fantasy VII Remake is not a PS4 exclusive. Rather, it'll be platform-exclusive for 1 year before possible moving to other platforms.

There have been rumors about Final Fantasy VII Remake going cross-platform for quite some time, now. In July, Xbox Germany's Facebook page announced that the game would arrive on Xbox in 2020. Square Enix quickly stepped in, though. Speaking to IGN, they stated that "We have no plans for other platforms."

The new cover art seems to indicate that things have changed. Since Final Fantasy VII Remake is slated to arrive on PS4 on March 3rd, 2020, a one-year exclusivity deal would mean the game could arrive on other platforms in 2021 at earliest.

Square Enix hasn't made an official statement yet, but the cover art is the strong evidence yet for a multi-platform release.

If you can't wait another 15 months for the remade classic, there's an alternative for the here and now: modders have used the ESRGAN AI algorithm to upscale background art in the original game. While character models are still blocky, the backgrounds look stunning.

We'll likely hear more soon from on Final Fantasy VII Remake going multi-plat. We'll update you with details as and when they arrive.
