Reviews for the Nokia 8.3 5G
The Nokia 8.3 5G arrives with some delay, and unfortunately, this is also noticeable on the phone with which Nokia wants to shake up the upper class: In this way, there is no 90 Hz display and no Wi-Fi 6. At least the smartphone is 5G capable and classy, but is that enough?

The Nokia 8.3 5G shows very few frame drops at 30 fps and 60 fps, and our testers observed no frame drops when playing video games, but motion blur is very visible. Touch is mostly accurate on the entire display surface, but the device lacks smoothness. While the Nokia 8.3 5G ignores ghost touches on its edges in portrait orientation, it does not do so when in landscape mode. Further, aliasing is quite visible when playing video games. But the device manages judder well at 24, 30, and 60 fps, and is flicker-free.

A decent price for some excellent hardware and software should make the Nokia 8.3 5G a better option than it feels like. But other phones like the Pixel 5, OnePlus 8 and Galaxy S20 FE offer more for the same price.

An all-around great value for money mid-range phone, the Nokia 8.3 5G just happens to also boast support for all existing 5G bands, which is something that most flagship phones don't even do. Even if you don't care for 5G, at R13 999 (RRP), you're getting a supremely well put together mobile device.

HMD Global, the owners of the Nokia smartphone brand, has shown some laudable willingness to experiment with the imaging technologies of its phones at the high end (even if the results can be mixed). But in the mid-range Nokia 8.3 5G, the company goes for a traditional camera configuration that looks fairly good on paper but fails to impress in practice. While potentially interesting as a reasonably powerful phone with 5G and a pure Android OS uncluttered by manufacturer modifications, imaging is not a particular strength of the Nokia when compared to the competition.

While a bit more expensive than 5G options from brands like Motorola, it feels like it’s worth the extra money with a solid build quality, better photography experience, and a better software experience with longer promised update tail. Nokia’s continued delivery of the Android One program makes the 8.3 5G worthy of consideration.

The Nokia 8.3 5G is a competent mid-range phone that gets pretty much all the basics right. The only downside is that it targets a very busy space in the market full of handsets with more developed feature sets, like the Pixel 5 and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro.

The Nokia 8.3 5G is Nokia's one and only flagship offering for the U.S. this year, and unfortunately, it's too little too late for the company. This isn't a terrible phone by any means — offering good performance, long battery life, and a striking design — but it just doesn't hold up to the rest of the competition. You could buy the Nokia 8.3 5G and have a decent time with it, but when you can spend the same amount or less money for a vastly better alternative, it's hard to make an argument in Nokia's favor.

There’s a specific sort of user that’ll enjoy the Nokia 8.3 5G. This device is also set for release with Verizon in a slightly different configuration – mostly to enable mmWave 5G – with the device called “Nokia 8 V 5G UW”. Barring unforeseen tweaking done to that phone by Verizon, this review should serve as a basic preview for that phone, too. The Nokia 8.3 5G is a great smartphone. It looks great and it feels great. Its value is based in simplicity mixed with forward-aimed connectivity and guarantees for quality in both hardware and software (with the updates to boot!) This configuration of the Nokia 8.3 5G was priced at around $700 USD when this review was first published.

The Nokia 8.3 has much to like and I believe firmly holds its ground against others in this tier and price range. While not the cheapest 765G chipset phone out there, it’s also not the most expensive either. I would suggest opting for the 8GB/128GB model just for that extra oomph and if you need more storage, invest in an SD Card, which are very cheap these days.

Also, while it’s unfair to compare a £500 phone to a £1,200 one, I did notice the fluidity of moving through the app ecosystem wasn’t as good as my normal iPhone 11 Pro and the screen did jerk a few times as I tried to snappily and speedily change from one app to the other in quick succession.

The Nokia 8.3 5G isn’t the most exciting phone you’ll read about this year, but with strong specs and a large screen there’s plenty here to appeal to those looking to upgrade to 5G with a handset that won’t break the bank. That said, a meager storage offering and an annoying Google Assistant button mean it’s not a device without its frustrations.

The Nokia 8.3 5G hits a lot of the features Nokia phones are known for: good value, a decent camera, and a clean software experience. If you want to get involved with 5G but want to spend as little money as possible, then this is a phone worth looking at.

The Nokia 8.3 5G feels like a good phone that's arrived at the wrong time. It's impressive as many similar phones are, with good design, a nice display and plenty of power. But it's let down by a price that's high and a camera system that's not great.

The Nokia 8.3 5G, though not perfect, offers something unique for mid-range buyers with an interest in videography. The all-day battery life, big display and stunning rear all help too!

Model:
With the latest Nokia 8.3 5G, the company has announced its first big step into the world of 5G. While it is worth mentioning that the Nokia 8.3 5G is not the most exciting phone this year, it has strong specs and a large screen, so there is plenty here to appeal to those looking to upgrade to 5G with a handset that will not break the bank. In terms of its design, the Nokia 8.3 5G is similar to HMD Global’s Nokia handsets from previous years, including a metal central logo and Gorilla Glass on the rear of the phone. The phone also comes with a ‘refracted light’ design that gives it a unique look rather than just a solid colour. The phone comes in only one colour, called Polar Night, that carries shades of blue. The overall unique finish definitely gives the phone an eye-catching look.
As far as the display is concerned, this phone has been equipped with a 6.81-inch Full-HD+ screen with an aspect ratio of 20:9. This simply means that the screen is obviously taller than those on most handsets, giving the user a bigger screen without the phone feeling too large in the hand. While the Full-HD resolution does not promise a picture as sharp and detailed as seen on a QHD device, it is fine for day-to-day tasks and viewing. However, it is a bit of a shame that HMD Global stuck with a 60Hz display refresh rate on the Nokia 8.3 5G, when even some mid-range phones are getting smoother-looking displays of 90Hz or above these days. There is also a punch-hole for the selfie camera in the top-left corner of the display, but it is fairly unobtrusive.
In terms of its cameras, the rear camera array on the Nokia 8.3 5G includes a 64MP f/1.89 main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera with an aperture of f/2.2, a 2MP macro snapper, and a 2MP depth sensor. While this setup does not quite match the penta-lens array on the Nokia 9 PureView, all the cameras create shots that look good enough for sharing on social media, especially the main camera which produces rather sharp and colourful images. Auto mode is capable of capturing nice-looking daytime shots in good lighting. Apart from that, there is also a night mode, but it is definitely not as impressive as similar modes on many other phones, like the Google Pixel 4a. For selfies, there is a 24MP shooter on the front of the Nokia 8.3 5G that manages to capture impressive-looking snaps and performs well for video calls, too.
In terms of its processor, the Nokia 8.3 5G has been equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765 chipset with either 6 GB of RAM with 64 GB of storage or 8 GB of RAM with 128 GB of storage. As for the battery, the phone carries a 4,500mAh battery that can be quickly recharged. Overall, this is a great phone to be explored, depending on individual needs and preferences.

Only a few smartphones have larger screens.
Large display-sizes allow higher resolutions. So, details like letters are bigger. On the other hand, the power consumption is lower with small screen diagonals and the devices are smaller, more lightweight and cheaper.
