No cables needed: Two e-ink displays can show color images and the time

The range of systems with e-ink technology is quite broad even beyond traditional e-readers, including smart picture frames. NowMean is one such system, but it comes with two separate screens. This split design makes sense conceptually, as the lower display shows the time, which therefore refreshes every minute. This allows the main display to show the same image for a longer period. Since e-ink displays without a backlight only require power when switching content, this ultimately benefits battery life as well.
The main display measures 7.3 inches diagonally. It is an E Ink Spectra display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, meaning it also supports color output. The lower display is also based on electronic ink, measures 2.9 inches diagonally, and has a resolution of 296 x 128 pixels. The lower screen cannot display color content. It shows the time, along with the current date, and apparently can also display short messages. Communication is handled via Bluetooth. Thanks to the integrated 1,500mAh battery, it does not require a permanent cable connection for power.
NowMean is currently available to order as part of a crowdfunding campaign. The significant financial risks that come with this still apply, though discounts are still being advertised. Backers are expected to receive one unit with pledges starting at about $159. Potential backers should still take a close look at the shipping terms.
