Nintendo Switch 2: Game development in full swing, speculation about cross-gen productions
Although there are hints about a possible unveiling in March, Nintendo itself has not yet made any announcements about a new console. Nonetheless, game development already seems to be in full swing. In an anonymous survey conducted in the run-up to the Game Developer Conference (GDC), hundreds of game developers stated that they are already working on titles for the potential Nintendo Switch 2.
In the aforementioned survey, GDC organizers asked around 3000 developers about various topics, including their current projects and preferred platforms. The development of games for the supposed Nintendo Switch 2 accounts for 8%.
Nintendo Switch 2 very interesting for game developers
GDC organizers also asked developers which platforms they currently find most interesting. 32% of participants voted for the new Nintendo console. This is also fueling hope among gamers for a worthy successor to the Switch. After all, developers are likely to be already aware of the specs of the new Nintendo console.
Backwards compatibility and cross-gen productions conceivable
One reason for the high number of programmers already working on projects for the supposed Nintendo Switch 2 may well be the possibility of backwards compatibility. Since Nintendo has already announced that it will be possible to switch to the next console via the Nintendo Online Account, this is not unlikely.
Hence, many games currently in development may be released for both the new console and the current Nintendo Switch. Such cross-gen productions were also popular when switching from the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 5. The strong distribution of the current Switch with over 130 million units could also be motivating developers to offer their games on both platforms.
