The SuperStation One is the latest project from YouTuber Taki Udon and his company Retro Remake, which we have already reported on when the device was still in development under the codename "SS One". Most technical specifications were already known, but now the retro console finally has an official launch date and can be pre-ordered very soon.
As revealed before, this is a console based on a MiSTer FPGA board. The design is obviously inspired by the original PlayStation and its large buttons on top, but the SuperStation One is more compact and doesn’t have a disc drive. For those who are looking to play games from original discs, an optional add-on called the SuperDock will be offered.
This dock can play CDs, DVDs and further adds four USB ports and an M.2 SSD slot. This SSD allows gamers to digitalize their personal PlayStation 1 game collection. Thanks to a built-in NFC chip, NFC stickers can be added to game cases, which automatically launch the corresponding game when the case is placed near the retro console.
Without the SuperDock, gamers will need ROM files of their games, which should be launched from a USB drive. Thanks to the FPGA chip, PlayStation 1 games should run exactly as they did on the original PS1. Support for original PlayStation Memory Cards and controllers ensures a quite authentic retro gaming experience. Last but not least, analog video output allows users to connect the SuperStation One to an old-fashioned CRT television.
