New Sony PS6 Portable leak confirms one of the biggest features of handheld console

For next-gen, Sony is reportedly preparing not only a PlayStation 6 home console but also a handheld PlayStation 6 Portable gaming console. This will be the first time since 2011’s PS Vita that Sony will be bringing a standalone portable console to the market. Leaks have alleged that the Sony PS6 Portable will be more powerful than the Xbox Series S and be able to play PS6 games.
However, an important aspect of the PS6 and the PS6 Portable that has remained up in the air is the backward compatibility. While it is highly likely that the PS6 and the PS6 Portable will be able to natively play PS5 games, it remains to be seen if the backwards compatibility extends further back. Moore’s Law Is Dead has now provided a definitive answer to this question, claiming that the PS6 Portable will be able to play PS5 as well as PS4 games natively.
MLID’s information reportedly comes directly from an internal Sony document, which “explicitly” mentions that the PS6 Portable’s Canis APU will be able to run PS6, PS5, and PS4 games. However, since the PS6 handheld console is unlikely to have the ability to play physical media, you’ll only be able to run games that you own digitally. If that’s the case, you’ll have to buy digital versions of the same games you own physically to play on the PS6 Portable.
That said, we do hope Sony can figure out a way to offer owners of physical PS5 and PS4 games the ability to play a digital version on the PS6 handheld, as it would be a pretty awesome feature.
The PS6 and the PS6 Portable are reportedly landing sometime in Fall 2027 at prices that might be lower than what many people are expecting. So, if you can’t wait that long for a handheld PlayStation console, your only option is the PlayStation Portal, which allows you to remotely play your PS5 library.
