Lenovo might’ve accidentally spilled the beans on the next AMD APUs from the Strix Point family. A brochure of the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 has surfaced, which claims that the new processors will be under the Ryzen 8050 name. Looking back, the current Hawk Point CPUs fall under the 8040 name, so the naming does make sense.
The brochure hints at a noticeable performance upgrade in the AI department, with the new Ryzen 8050 APUs coming with XDNA 2. This new NPU promises three times faster performance than the current Hawk Point APUs and will turbocharge AI tasks with hardware acceleration.
Getting back to the naming of the new Strix Point APUs, the reason why they are still in the 8000 series is that AMD previously confirmed that “8” will be referring to the products released in 2024. The “5” on the Ryzen 8050 is there to say that the product is using Zen 5 architecture.
As for the launch date of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 and other Strix Point laptops, AMD previously confirmed it’s in 2024, but we don’t know the exact timeline yet. There’s a chance that we may see these laptops getting unveiled at the Computex 2024, which is set for next month.
