The Up Squared 7100 Edge is a new mini PC that is particularly well-suited for certain professional and even industrial use cases, for which machines or other devices are hooked up via a serial port.
Aaeon is a rather busy company that makes single-board computers and also mini PCs. The company primarily targets industrial and professional customers and professional users, and not necessarily regular users. The Up Squared 7100 Edge is a new system that can be equipped with two different processors and always comes with special connectivity options that are useful in an industrial context.
To be more precise, the mini PC is powered by the Intel N100 or Intel N97. Raw performance is usually not a major concern when the computer is used to operate external devices or machines. These can be connected via two RS232/422/485 ports, which are interfaces that are found on many industrial machines. For regular users, there are three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, additional USB ports can be added via a header.
Monitors can be connected via HDMI 2.0b and DisplayPort 1.2, and 3.5mm jack for headphones or speakers and two Gigabit Ethernet ports are available as well. The Up Squared 7100 Edge is further equipped with 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and up to 128GB eMMC storage. Two additional M.2 slots in the 2230 and 2280 format can be used for storage expansion. The mini PC is powered by a 12V DC connector. Aaeon is already selling its new system, prices start at $352.

I have been active as a journalist for over 10 years, most of it in the field of technology. I worked for Tom’s Hardware and ComputerBase, among others, and have been working for Notebookcheck since 2017. My current focus is particularly on mini PCs and single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi – so in other words, compact systems with a lot of potential. In addition, I have a soft spot for all kinds of wearables, especially smartwatches. My main profession is as a laboratory engineer, which is why neither scientific contexts nor the interpretation of complex measurements are foreign to me.

My fascination for technology goes back a long way to the Pentium II era. Modding, overclocking and treasuring computer hardware has since become an integral part of my life. As a student, I further developed a keen interest in mobile technologies that can make the stressful college life so much easier. After I fell in love with the creation of digital content while working in a marketing position, I now scour the web to bring you the most exciting topics in the world of tech. Outside the office, I’m particularly passionate about motorsports and mountain biking.
